Chapter 2
HANNAH I wake up noticing Jamie is not in the bed. I blink around drowsily and realise I am indeed alone in the bedroom. Could it be happening again? – The unsettling thought crosses my mind. I pull myself onto my elbows and listen for any little noises. It all started last week. Jamie was tossing and turning beside me in the bed drenched in sweat, and was talking incoherently in his sleep. I got a little scared, this had never happened before. It took a while to wake him up, and he was visibly very disturbed as he slowly came back to reality. He must have had a nightmare, but he couldn’t – or wouldn’t – tell me what exactly it was. I had never seen him so vulnerable, so defenceless as that night. He was like a confused little boy. I hugged him tight and comforted him for about half an hour, stroking his hair, before we could both go to sleep again. I didn’t ascribe much importance to the issue. Anyone can have a bad dream sometimes – even really intense ones. And then a few days ago I found him in the kitchen at night, leaning against the counter, staring at a glass of water, petrified. He said, he had had a bad dream. Again. He didn’t want to tell me what exactly it was, and I didn’t want to get into that in the middle of the night. I thought he would probably share it in the end, if he needed to. After we went back into the room, we cuddled tight, which turned into something more. Much more. Jamie made love to me in such a way I can’t even put into words. He was unbelievable. Gentle, a tad desperate, possessive and consuming. I had the feeling he was trying to prove something. That he loved me? That I was his? That we belonged together? Maybe all these things. He even found it hard to detach himself from me in the morning, when we both were running really late. We didn’t discuss it, I had the feeling that the subject was uncomfortable to him. I’ve almost forgotten about the whole issue, until now. I get out of bed and look around. I see a pale line of light under the bathroom door. I sneak there and carefully open it. Jamie’s leaning over the wash basin and vehemently splashes water into his face. By now, even his hair is drenched. He’s breathing with an open mouth, and his chest is heaving like a steam engine. Oh, Lord! What could be the matter? I lift a towel off the rack, and step up to him with worry. He slowly turns his head towards me. His pupils are dilated. He looks like an alarmed beast, blinded by the lights of a camion rushing towards it. My heart is breaking at the sight. “Another nightmare?” I ask, and grabbing both his shoulders, I turn him to face me. He gives a silent nod. I gently begin to dry his face and hair with the towel. He allows it with eyes closed. “It was just a dream, Jamie. A bad dream,” – I whisper soothingly, and he nods again. He keeps gulping, and his breathing slowly returns to normal. After a long time, he speaks huskily. “Sorry to have woken you. Again.” With a sigh, I let the towel drop in front of me, I hug his neck, and cuddle up to him. “Come off it! I love to be up with you at night. Exciting things happen.” I can almost feel him smiling into my hair. “Come, let’s go back to bed.” “Okay,” I respond, and before I realize what’s going on, I’m already in his arms. In the room I see that the display on the digital clock says 3:30. Jamie carefully puts me on the bed, nestles himself beside me, and pulls the cover over us. I can still feel the distraction in him. His body is hot like lava, the shirt is moist on his back and neck. “Don’t move! I’ll be back in a tick,” he says, forcing a relaxed tone, and planting a kiss on my lips, he gets up. I watch him peel the wet shirt off his body. Even now, in the dark of night, he is beautiful like a classical Greek statue. He goes to the wardrobe and soon appears again with a clean shirt. He gets back beside me, his lips seek mine, and I whole-heartedly want to be the remedy to his problems. I wish he would tell me his dream. It hurts me a little that he’s not sharing what kind of night demons are chasing him recently. “Don’t you want to tell me what the problem is? It might help if you talked about it,” I try cautiously. He pulls me very close. He twists his legs and arms around me like tendrils. I’m his captive, and I don’t mind it one bit. If this is really captivity, then I don’t want it ever to end. “I’ll tell you, but not now,” he whispers into my neck. “We both need some sleep.” “Tomorrow, then?” “Tomorrow,” he says permissively. “I’ll take you out to dinner.” “All right,” I say, drowsily. “But go to sleep now!” he tells me. I receive a sweet goodnight kiss and know that the topic has been exhausted. ~ My underbelly is still tickly with the lustful memory of this morning’s good-morning-sex with which Jamie woke me. No matter how eventful his night had been, it certainly didn’t keep him from performing a hundred percent in the morning. I woke up feeling his head between my legs, and he was kissing my inner thighs with dedication. From then on, everything happened fast as lightning. An insane round in bed, then a second one under the shower. This man is unbelievable. Insatiable, and always ready to go. Before we said goodbye, we agreed that he will take me to our favourite restaurant tonight, on the bank of the Thames, and we will thoroughly discuss his nightmares. To be more correct, it was me who insisted on the latter, and he consented, like a good boy. The girls and Sven were teasing me all day about the satisfied, dreamy smile that wouldn’t leave my face. They had a point! Gran, thank God, is better, business is going well, I love my work, and I’m the happiest wife in the world. So why wouldn’t I be all smiles? My life is finally on the up. I wanted to get out of the taxi a little farther away, so I’d have a chance to walk to the shop. The weather is amazing. The air feels lukewarm, and the sunlight is magical. I enjoy being able to wear sandals again, and there’s no need for jackets. I buy myself a coffee-to-go and tip the guy with the braces behind the counter very generously. I’m in a great mood, as usual in the past few months. Jamie has a good effect on me, and it’s mutual. I’m sure if he pours his heart out today and tells me finally about the nightmare that’s been bothering him lately, we will find a way to work it out. We’re a great team together. My phone begins to ring. With the coffee in my hand, it takes a while until I fish it out of my bag. I’m quite surprised to see that it’s Ian calling. And I also have a missed call from him. What could he want? I press the green button, and begin to speak. “Hello Ian. How are you?” “Hannah.” His voice is very strange, as if he is in pain. Now he’s quiet for a while, which makes me more nervous. “Ian, is anything wrong? Are you okay?” I ask with worry. “Y… yes. I’m well.” “Did anything happen?” The answer is a deep sigh. Damn it, I’m not liking this at all. Is it about Jamie? For a moment, my heart stops beating, but I quickly convince myself that it’s impossible. We had parted a few hours back, and I received his last kinky text message ten minutes ago. Yet, I can’t chase the thought away. I can hardly squeeze the words out of my mouth. “Is it Jamie?” I ask quietly. “No, Hannah. There’s nothing wrong with Jamie. I’m not calling about him.” “Goodness! Has something happened to Rose? Don’t do this to me, Ian. You’re scaring me to death.” “Hannah!” my name bursts out of him like a painful sigh. “Rose is okay.” “Is it Gran?” I am slowly paralyzed by fear, although it doesn’t seem very logical why my father in law of all people would call me if anything happened to Gran. “It’s not her either. But it would be best if you could come immediately to St. Andrew’s,” he adds gloomily. In thought, I quickly run through all the names of friends I should feel concerned about, but it doesn’t get me closer to the answer. “The hospital?” I moan with terror. “Please, Hannah, hurry.” “But why?” “Just come here. I just can’t say this on the phone.” Puzzled, I stop in the middle of the street, and look around for help, still thoroughly confused. No. I decide to dig my heels in, and growl into the phone with annoyance. “I’m not going anywhere until you tell me what happened. I mean it, Ian.” In response, I hear his frustrated muttering, and then, for a few seconds, there’s nothing. Finally, his voice comes as if from the grave. “It’s about River.” At first, I can’t even make sense of what he said. It takes a good few seconds until the penny drops. “River?” I repeat with a flat voice. My brain begins to work slowly, but there isn’t much I can do with the information. And Ian is terrifyingly quiet at the other end. “What about him?” I ask eventually, sounding powerless. “Hannah, I don’t know how to tell you, but…” he struggles, while I break out in cold sweat. “You must come here. River is… alive. He’s back.” I can hear his words, but my brain will not, or cannot process their meaning. Suddenly, everything goes dark around me, the plastic cup lands on...
