The Law of Circumcision
Chapter 1
As a believer in Yahshua (Jesus), there is much debate and discussion about circumcision, whether or not it is necessary according to the law of Elohim (God) or as a Gentile convert.
Many others believe that the death of Yahshua the Messiah abrogated the laws of Yah, thereby ushering in a system of grace and faith without the works of the law (Galatians 2:16).
This Book will examine the discussion and controversy around circumcision. It will determine if it is necessary for a believer in God to receive a circumcision by analyzing both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible. In addition, it will determine Yah’s will regarding circumcision and the practicing of his Law.
The book will answer the following questions:
1. What is circumcision?
2. Are there medical benefits to circumcision?
3. What is Spiritual and Literal circumcision?
4. What is Yah’s (God’s) law pertaining to circumcision?
5. Who was commanded to be circumcised and why?
6. What is the New Testament view on circumcision and to whom is circumcision applicable to in the New Testament?
7. What is spiritual circumcision?
8. How does one circumcise their heart or mind?
9. Are Worshipers still under Yah’s Law or has it been nullified by Yahshua’s death?
All of the aforementioned questions and many more will be answered contextually in this in-depth book analysis.
This analysis now begins with the biblical origin of circumcision as it relates to Yah’s law.
Genesis 17:10 -14 and Leviticus 12:3 Law for all males to be circumcised as well as those who are bought with a Hebrew’s money (slaves or servants) and those born in a Hebrew’s home are to be circumcised on the 8th day. [Summation]
The Hebrew word for “circumcision” is Strong's H4139 – muwlah , which is from the root word muwl - Strong's H4135, and it has the following usages:
1) To circumcise, let oneself be circumcised, cut, be cut off;
a) (Qal) to circumcise,
b) (Niphal) to be circumcised, circumcise oneself,
c) (Hiphil) to cause to be circumcised,
d) (Hithpolel) to be cut off 1[Italicizes added] The Most High Yah commands all males to be circumcised on the 8th day as a token of the covenant between Yah and the descendants of Abraham. The Hebrew word for TOKEN is Strong's H0226 - 'owth meaning:
1) sign, signal a) a distinguishing mark,
2) token, ensign, standard, miracle, proof. ‘owth is probably from 0225 (in the sense of appearing), which has the usage:
1) (Niphal) to consent, agree. This denotes a sign/mark/evidence, as an identifying mark of a son of the covenant.2 What is a covenant?
Cov·e·nant, –noun
1. An agreement, usually formal, between two or more persons to do or not do something specified.
2. Law. An incidental clause in such an agreement.
3. Ecclesiastical. A solemn agreement between the members of a church to act together in harmony with the precepts of the gospel.
4. Bible.
a. The conditional promises made to humanity by God, as revealed in Scripture.
b. The agreement between God and the ancient Israelites, in which God promised to protect them if they kept His law and were faithful to Him.3 The act of circumcision, which is an outward token or sign that a man performed to exhibit that he was a son of the Abrahamic covenant, was practiced long before Yah gave the Sinaitic covenant to Moses. The rite of circumcision began with Abraham.
However, as it will be demonstrated later, Abraham was not the first to institute circumcision in his community. The institution of this circumcision is by divine appointment, which is what makes it different from all other circumcisions before and after it. Abraham’s circumcision was a sign and seal of the contract that Yah made with Abraham.
The following verses demonstrate why Abraham received a covenant (contract) from Yah and how this covenant would be sealed.
Genesis 17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be you perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly. 3 And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying, 4 As for me, behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. 5 Neither shall your name any more be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made you. 6 And I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come out of you. 7 And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto you, and to your descendants after you. 8 And I will give unto you, and to your descendants after you, the land in which you are a sojourner, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. (KJV2) [Italicizes added]
Abraham was identified by Yah as a righteous man; therefore Yah felt that he could use him and his progeny to represent him theocratically upon the face of the earth. Yah’s proposal was that if Abraham and his descendants would serve and worship him and walk in his ways he would bless Abraham and his descendants as well as give them their own land.
To solidify this covenant, Yah commanded that blood be shed, and this blood would come from circumcision (a sign and seal of Yah’s contract with Abraham and his progeny). Once this blood had been shed, the circumcised person would be considered a son of the Abrahamic covenant and the promises entailed within the covenant.
Genesis 17:24-27 Now Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In the very same day Abraham was circumcised and Ishmael his son. 27 All the men of his household, who were born in the house or bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him. (NASB)
As we can see here, when Abraham received the commandment to circumcise all the males of his house, he did it immediately, as well as circumcising his young son Ishmael.
Genesis 21:4 Then Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. (NASB)
Abraham continued to keep this covenant by circumcising Isaac on the 8th day.
Let’s take a look at other examples of individuals who practiced this token of the covenant:
Exodus 4:25 Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son’s foreskin and threw it at Moses’ feet, and she said, “You are indeed a bridegroom of blood to me.”(NASB)
Luke 2:21 And when eight days had passed, before His circumcision, His name was then called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. (NASB)
Yahshua, the Messiah whom is called Jesus Christ by the Gentiles received his circumcision on the eighth day because this is what YAH (God) commanded the children of Israel to do.
Luke 1:59 And it happened that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and they were going to call him Zacharias, after his father. (NASB)
The parents of John the Baptist circumcised their child, as described in Luke 1:59 according to the law.
Philippians 3:5 circumcised the eighth day, of the nation of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; as to the Law, a Pharisee; (NASB)
Paul says in the aforementioned that he was circumcised on the eighth day because this is what Yah commanded the children of Israel to do to express the Abrahamic covenant in their flesh.
Acts 16:1-3 Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra and a disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a...
