After following the traffickers' group for two days, they finally arrived at the border of Lrisa Dunn. Hailey couldn't help but breathe a sigh of relief, thinking that she was just one step away from escaping Dunn Kingdom. However, she noticed that even the officials seemed tense, including the man in charge.
"What's happening?" With no other choice, she turned to Ava for information.
"The borders of each kingdom are unstable, so they're worried..." Ava replied, her eyes filled with concern.
Hailey, being astute, immediately understood the situation. The border areas of the kingdoms were sensitive, and the officials and soldiers wouldn't appear there easily, leaving room for bandits to take advantage.
Ava sighed again, "But what can we do? If we want wealth and prosperity, we have to take risks."
Hailey didn't expect Ava to have such courage and nodded, "To seek wealth and prosperity, risks are inevitable."
"You're right... You're absolutely right!" Ava seemed greatly inspired, repeatedly praising Hailey, "I've always thought that way, but I couldn't express it as beautifully as you do. Can you teach me?"
Hailey hesitated, feeling somewhat awkward, "Well, I'm not sure how to teach that... It's something unique to me, coming from a different background."
"I see... You come from a literary family, after all. How about teaching me how to read?" Ava felt a bit dejected for a moment but then looked at Hailey with hope, her eyes filled with tears and a sense of injustice.
Hailey nodded, "That's not difficult. Along the way, whenever we see words, I'll teach you to recognize and remember them. By the way, let me start by teaching you how to write your own name."
"Thank you, sister." Ava expressed her gratitude with a gentle voice, her eyes filled with joy.
During the days they traveled along the border, they couldn't see any words due to the wilderness. So, Hailey taught Ava how to write their names and Olivia's name, as well as some simple characters.
In fact, Hailey herself couldn't write Old English. It was probably an instinct of this body. Ava was also clever and quickly memorized the characters. After three days, she had learned more than twenty characters.
Occasionally, the other three women would sneak glances in their direction, hoping to learn a few characters. Hailey realized that in this era, the ability to read was a skill that many people aspired to but couldn't attain easily. To have literacy and knowledge was even more extraordinary! Being able to experience it in a cultured person was quite an advantage.
"Tsk tsk, she's going to annoy the officials this time!"
"Just because she knows a few characters? She's acting like she doesn't even know who she is..."
"Stop bickering. Let's listen and see how she gets reprimanded..."
On this clear morning, the convoy was not as peaceful as usual, and they didn't set off on time. Everyone's attention was focused on the women in a standoff with the officials.
"Do we have to take this route? It's dangerous." These words were spoken when Hailey boarded the carriage and, while standing at the front, casually surveyed the road ahead. She frowned, jumped off the carriage, and approached the official's carriage to plead her case.
"I've traveled this route back and forth three times already, and nothing has happened. It's also the shortest distance." The official patiently replied.
Hailey still frowned, "That may be so, but it's always better to be safe than sorry. The terrain ahead is taboo for marching because it's ideal for ambushes. If someone were to roll boulders down from the high ground on both sides of the mountain path, it would result in heavy casualties."
"Marching? Hahaha..." The official burst into laughter, mocking her, "You, a woman, understand matters of marching and war? Enough already. Don't spout alarmist talk here. Go back and prepare for the journey!"
Hailey wanted to say more, but he interrupted her, "Why are you still dawdling!? Even if we encounter bandits, they won't take your life. At most, you'll be captured. What else are you worried about? Go, go, stop bothering me!"
Is it enough to just save our lives? Well, then there's nothing to worry about. Hailey sneered inwardly and retreated.
After returning to her own carriage, Hailey received three gloating glances and one slightly worried and puzzled gaze. However, she didn't want to pay them any attention. She focused on contemplating how to deal with bandits if they were to encounter them.
After about half a day of travel, another group of riders ahead caught everyone's attention. The carriage in that group was grand and made of top-quality materials, adorned with the family crest. In addition to the coachman, there were fifty strong guards, half of them mounted, exuding an imposing presence.
"What does the inscription on the crest say?" Ava peeked her head out and asked Hailey.
"It says 'Lrisa.'" Hailey had just finished speaking when she heard the four women exclaim with delight. She couldn't help but look at Ava with some confusion.
But this time, Ava seemed immersed in her own joy and didn't explain to Hailey. It was Olivia who unintentionally resolved her confusion, "Lrisa? Could it be... a royal family or noble family from Lrisa Kingdom? Even if they are from a collateral line, if we can enter such a household..."
That's how it is. Following the traffickers was never a solution. It didn't feel good to have one's fate controlled by others. Hailey secretly contemplated whether she should find a way to seek refuge with the owner of this group or observe them for a while.
"Hurry and catch up!" the official's voice came, filled with joy. Indeed, in such a place where bandits frequently roamed, traveling with a group like this provided an extra layer of protection.
Sure enough, before long, the sound of grateful thanks from the official could be heard, "Thank you, young sir from Lrisa! Thank you, young sir from Lrisa!"
Upon hearing that they would be traveling with a member of a noble family, everyone felt a sense of relief. The official even gave Hailey a reproachful glance, as if saying, "Even a young sir from Lrisa is taking this route. Can it be wrong?"
"Oh..." At this moment, Hailey let out a sigh and withdrew into the carriage.
Ava asked curiously, "Why did you sigh?"
"It's nothing." Hailey shook her head and refused to reveal her thoughts.
Ava seemed somewhat annoyed by her secrecy and distanced herself, engaging in conversation with the other three women. They were discussing how they could approach the noble in the carriage during lunch break.
Hailey couldn't understand why they would assume she could impersonate someone without even knowing their height or build. But just now, when the official called her "young sir from Lrisa." She figured that he couldn't be too young. If he were just a child, it wouldn't be a problem for her to be his attendant, right?
However, Hailey's pleasant fantasy was shattered during lunch. Stepping down from the Lrisa family's carriage was a young man who hadn't yet reached his prime. His appearance wasn't remarkable—a plain face with ordinary features that would blend into a crowd. Yet, even so, he possessed the qualities of a desirable catch: a dignified appearance and a good family background.
Hailey observed him from a distance, catching a glimpse of the perpetual caution, flattery, and lack of self-assuredness in his small eyes. Despite his upright appearance, he lacked the air of confidence one would expect, instead seeming heavy-footed with small steps that made him appear unimpressive.
With these observations, Hailey's suspicions grew stronger, and she understood that he was not a reliable ally. Although Young Sir Lrisa allowed them to travel together, he showed no interest in getting close to them. During lunch, their seating area was separated by a considerable distance from Hailey and the others, depriving her of the tantalizing aroma of delicious food. She had to settle for dry rations and plain water. However, the other four women were far from idle. They sneakily watched Young Sir Lrisa and engaged in whispered discussions.
"Although he's not the most handsome, he certainly has the air of a nobleman!"
"Of course! With such a large carriage and so many guards, how could he be anything less? If we were to be sold, I bet it would only be to his guards."
"Ah... Then how about trying my luck? This is such a great opportunity! If I succeed, Ava, don't forget about me!"
"Just you? I don't think any of us stand a chance. Among us, Ava is the most beautiful. Ava should go... and if she succeeds, she must remember me as her sister!"
Hailey raised an eyebrow upon hearing their conversation. It seemed that women, when compared to others, often felt uncomfortable. But she quickly realized that her own appearance lacked the delicate beauty required for being a concubine, which Ava possessed.
"Can I really do it?" Ava asked shyly.
"Go ahead! The young sir is looking our way!" Olivia nudged her.
Following Olivia's gaze, Hailey noticed that Young Sir Lrisa was indeed glancing in their direction, with a smile on his face.
Is he a flirt?
Ava's eyes brightened upon meeting Young Sir Lrisa's gentle smile. She seemed moved and encouraged, standing up gracefully and taking light, graceful steps in his direction.
Observing the situation, Hailey concluded that Young Sir Lrisa was easily swayed and felt even more disdainful.
However, Hailey couldn't help but be curious and...
