This book examines stability maintenance as an alternative governance strategy adopted by the CPC and Chinese government in different social circumstances, including hospital disputes, incidents of environmental pollution, food safety issues and disaster settlements. The book concludes that stability maintenance as a governance strategy is a short-lived makeshift and will surely be replaced in the end, due to its limited effect at high costs, even though in many cases stability maintenance has played a major role in confronting the serious challenges in China’s public security.

Using case studies from China, this book will be of huge interests to students and scholars of Chinese studies, political science and sociology and it will also appeal to journalists and policy analysts with an interest in China also.
