This book examines cinematic/artistic representations of transnational journeys and border-crossings of various kinds in Europe, underscoring recent crosspollinations between cinema and art. Drawing on recent theories of transnational cinema, moving image media, and mobilities, Bayraktar provides historically situated close readings of films, videos, and time-based installations that concern diverse mobilities across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. The films and videos establish a non-Western countergeography of Europe that has produced multiple "others" in its constant efforts to recompose its borders and identity. They address psychological and sociological processes of integration and cultural syncretism as well as discrimination and racism against minorities and migrants. Although the geopolitical focus of this book is Europe, the works challenge territorially bounded conceptions of identity and culture.
