The pictures are a striking counterpoint to the images we’ve seen before, which were photographs with an intentionally subtle palette of whites, grays, blacks, beiges, and the like. Here, dazzling color is the primary formal motif. The expressive power of color in art, and in photography especially, has long fascinated Henderson: “Color has an immediacy, a sensory quality that can elicit emotions and instantly draw the viewer into an image,” explains the photographer, a trained art historian himself.

Mark Henderson worked for many years as an art historian at a leading cultural institution in Los Angeles but is now a full-time photographer. Although he continues to work occasionally in California, Henderson shoots primarily in his home state of Texas. In addition to the coffee table books devoted entirely to his photographs, HOUSEHOLD IDOLS, SUBURBAN PLEASURES, POOLSIDE, LUMINOSITY, AMERICAN EROS, POOLSIDE PLEASURES, and LAP OF LUXURY, highlights of his work are included in MEN: TWENTY FIVE YEARS IN PHOTOGRAPHY and various anthology books published by Bruno Gmünder, including BEAUTIFUL VISION, THE MEN OF BEAUTIFULMAG.EU, JEWELS, BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, TURN ON: TATTOOS, NATURAL BEAUTY, TRUNK SHOW, TURN ON: SPORTS, COCK TALES, TURN ON: MUSCLES, GAY PORN HEROES, TURN ON: GEAR, and BEARDS – AN UNSHAVED HISTORY.
