Introduction. Monographs. Catalogue of Major African Food and Spice Plants. Photographs.

Nigel Gericke, PhD, is a medical doctor, ethnobotanist, and ethnopharmacologist working on documentation, discovery, innovation, and novel product development from medicinal and food plants. He has particular research interests in mechanisms of action of CNS-active phytochemicals and in new drug discovery for malaria and other tropical diseases.

Dr. Gericke has spent the last twenty years immersed in all aspects of botanical foods and medicines discovery, research, development and commercialization—from original ethnobotanical documentation in the field through to isolating and characterizing active compounds to investigating the molecular biology underpinning indigenous medicinal plant use and directing clinical studies validating the safety and efficacy of plant extracts. He has been documenting, photographing and video recording indigenous uses of African plants for two decades.

Dr. Gericke is a longstanding member of the IUCN / WWF Medicinal Plants Specialist Group, a worldwide network of medicinal plant experts aiming to increase global awareness of conservation threats to medicinal plants, and to promote sustainable utilization and conservation of medicinal plants resources.

He is a founder member of the Association for African Medicinal Plants Standards (AAMPS).

A botanical highlight was his discovery of a new species of Gladiolus in 1977, Gladiolus filiformis (Golblatt, P. & Manning, J. 1998. Gladiolus in Southern Africa, Fernwood Press).

In all natural products projects Dr. Gericke has made it a prerequisite to adhere to ecologically sustainable practices, and to formalize agreements ensuring equitable benefit-sharing agreements for local communities and indigenous knowledge holders.
