The global halal industry is likely to grow to between three and four trillion US dollars in the next five years, from the current estimated two trillion, backed by a continued demand from both Muslims and non-Muslims for halal products. Realising the importance of the halal industry to the global community, the Academy of Contemporary Islamic Studies (ACIS), the Universiti Teknologi MARA Malaysia (UiTM) and Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) Brunei have organised the 4th International Halal Conference (INHAC) 2019 under the theme “Enhancing Halal Sustainability'. This book contains selected papers presented at INHAC 2019. It addresses halal-related issues that are applicable to various industries and explores a variety of contemporary and emerging issues. It covers aspects of halal food safety, related services such as tourism and hospitality, the halal industry - including aspects of business ethics, policies and practices, quality assurance, compliance and Shariahgovernance Issues, as well as halal research and educational development. Highlighting findings from both scientific and social research studies, it enhances the discussion on the halal industry (both in Malaysia and internationally), and serves as an invitation to engage in more advanced research on the global halal industry.

Nur Nafhatun Md Shariff obtained her first degree from the Academy of Islamic Studies majoring in Islamic Astronomy. She completed a Masters and then PhD in the Faculty of Science. She tutored in the Department of Fiqh & Usul at the Academy of Islamic Studies, and was a fellow in the Department of Science and Technology Studies at the University of Malaya. She worked at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Shah Alam in 2014. She currently holds several positions as a Research Management Unit (RMU) coordinator, Malaysian Research Assessment (MyRA) liaison officer, and was also recently a liaison officer in the Office of International Affairs (OIA). She is on the editorial board for the Astronomy Education Journal under the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and is a member of the Malaysian Islamic Astronomy Society. She is an associate fellow at the Institute of Science (IOS) and the Islamic Astronomy and Solar Astrophysics (IASA) Research Interest Group (RIG). Recently is also a member of the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

Zeiad Amjad Abdulrazzak Aghwan is a lecturer in the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali, Negara Brunei Darussalam. He obtained his first degree in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Mosul, Iraq, majoring in Animal Production, where he also obtained his Master’s. He completed his PhD at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), after which he was appointed as a postdoctoral researcher in the Halal Products Research Institute at UPM. He is a member of the Association of Agricultural Engineers/Mosul/Iraq, the Association of University Lecturers/Mosul/Iraq, the Azka Halal Group, and the Malaysian Society of Animal Production (MSAP). He was also on the advisory board of the Malaysian Journal of Halal Research. He is head of both the postgraduate and undergraduate students program, and supervises Master’s and PhD students in the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre at Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali, Negara Brunei Darussalam.

Tomizawa Hisao obtained his PhD in Cultural Anthropology (2002), a Master of Sociology (1980), and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences (1978) at University of Tokyo, respectively. He is currently Professor and Dean of the Graduate School of International Relations at University of Shizuoka, Japan. He is the first President of the Japan Society for Halal Science and Technology (JAHAS). He was Vice President, University of Shizuoka (2011-13) and President of the Japan Association for Malaysian Studies (2014-16). His main field of study is Malay Muslim society in and around Malaysia, and Southeast Asia more broadly. He has been engaged in research on the Halal industry since 2007, conducting fieldwork in Southeast Asia, MENA, East Asia, and South Asia.

Norliza Binti Dato Haji Mahalle is a lecturer at the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University (UNISSA) Brunei Darussalam. She obtained her first degree in Business Administration from the Kulliyah of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University, Malaysia (IIUM). She obtained her Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at the Faculty of Business, Economics and Policy Studies, University Brunei Darussalam (UBD). After her MBA in 2003, she started her career as an Economic Officer at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources, Brunei Darussalam. She authored the Blueprint for SME Development in Brunei Darussalam for the Promotion and Entrepreneurship Development Division of the Ministry. She had experience coordinating and monitoring various projects, including the Brunei Halal Project at the Ministry. She joined the university in 2011 as a lecturer at the Faculty of Business and Management Sciences. As a lecturer, she was also appointed various administrative posts including Industrial Attachment Coordinator for the Faculty, Deputy Dean of Faculty of Business and Management Sciences (FBMS) and later known as Faculty of Islamic Economics and Finance (FIEF) UNISSA. In September 2018, she assumed a lecturer post at the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre, UNISSA. Her interests are in Business, Human Resources Management, Organisational Behaviour, Strategic Management and Halal Industry. She is also now a PhD Scholar in Halal Management at the Halalan Thayyiban Research Centre, UNISSA.

Nur Farhani Zarmani is a Senior Lecturer in Academy of Contemporary Islamic Studies, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam and has been teaching subjects related to halal management such as Halal Assurance Management System, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point, Halal Slaughtering and Food Science. She earned a Bachelor Degree in Applied Science with Islamic Studies majoring in Biotechnology in 2012 from University of Malaya. In 2017, she obtained her PhD in Fiqh from the research on Halal Medical Device from the same university. She was also trained for 7 months for Halal Executive Training in Halal Management and Research Academy (MISDEC-HAMRA) and become a qualified part time trainer and facilitator for Halal Executive Training. Besides, she is now a co-opted member in the working group of development of Malaysian Standard (MS) of Halal Medical Device.

Zety Sharizat Bt Hamidi is Associate Professor in the Faculty of Applied Sciences, UiTM. She obtained her first degree from Physics Department majoring in Solar Astrophysics. She holds several positions as an Industrial Training coordinator and Physics and Material Sciences Coordinator. She is one of editorial board for Journal of International Letters of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy (ILCPA) and Senior Fellow of Centre for Human Rights and Advocacy (CENTHRA). Recently, she is member of Islamic Astronomy and Solar Astrophysics (IASA) Research Interest Group (RIG). Currently, she is a Head of Center Astrophysics and Applied Radiation (CAAR) at Institute of Science (IOS), UITM Shah Alam,Selangor.

Najahudin Lateh holds a Bachelor's degree in Islamic Studies from al-Azhar University, Egypt (1997), a Diploma in Education from the Ministry of Education (2000), a Master of Hadith, University of Malaya (2004) and Doctor of Philosophy in Shariah and Muamalat, UiTM (2016). Currently, he is a Senior Lecturer in Muamalat and Islamic Finance at the Academy of Contemporary Islamic Studies (ACIS), UiTM Shah Alam and was served as the Head of Zakat/Waqf Section, UiTM.

Hakimah Yaacob is a Senior Assistant Professor, Faculty of Islamic Economics & Finance, University of Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA), Gadong, Negara Brunei Darussalam. Prior to this, she was an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Laws National University of Malaysia. She has been appointed as court experts in several Islamic Finance cases in Malaysia, Brunei and Hong Kong. She is the author of ‘The World Banking System’ and ‘The Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) in Islamic Finance’. She has written almost 300 Articles including research Papers, books, journals, Public lectures, etc. She is currently serves as Shariah Advisor at Citibank Malaysia and Citibank Labuan. She is an expert in legal and regulatory framework of the world banking system. She has involved in drafting policies and advising Malaysian government in the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) involving 12 countries. Her consultation work includes advisory role in banking compliance involving US Laws on Islamic finance such as the TWEA, Money Laundering, Dodd Frank Act, Volker Rule, Regulation K, EMIR, etc. Her field of expertise are the international legal and regulatory, compliance and policy study in trade negotiation and finance.
