About the Author


Archbold, Carol A
Carol A. Archbold is the Walter F. and Verna Gehrts Endowed Professor at North Dakota State University in the Department of Criminal Justice in Fargo, North Dakota. Her research interests include police accountability and liability, police misconduct, women in policing, and race issues in the criminal justice system. She has published articles in such peer-reviewed journals as Police Quarterly, Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies and Management, Journal of Criminal Justice, and Journal of Crime and Justice. In 2004, Dr. Archbold published a book based on the first national study of the use of risk management in law enforcement in the United States, Police Accountability, Risk Management and Legal Advising (LFB Scholarly Publishing). She coauthored Women and Policing in America: Classic and Contemporary Readings (Wolters Kluwer/Aspen, 2011) and is the sole author of Policing: A Text/Reader (SAGE, 2013). Dr. Archbold is also coauthor (with Dr. Samuel Walker) of the second (2014) and third (2020) editions of The New World of Police Accountability.

Carol A. Archbold is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2002. Dr. Archbold’s research interests include women in policing, police accountability and liability, police handling of sexual assault cases, and police and race issues. She has published articles in such journals as Police Quarterly; Policing: An International Journal of Police Strategies and Management; International Journal of Police Science and Management; Police Practice and Research: An International Journal; Journal of Criminal Justice, and the Journal of Crime and Justice. In 2004, Dr. Archbold published a book based on the first national study of the use of risk management in law enforcement in the United States titled Police Accountability, Risk Management and Legal Advising (LFB Scholarly Publishing, 2004). Along with Samuel Walker and Leigh Herbst, she was a contributing author for Mediating Citizen Complaints Against Police Officers: A Guide for Police and Citizens, funded by the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, United States Department of Justice in Washington, DC. In 2011, Dr. Archbold authored Women and Policing in America: Classic and Contemporary Readings with Dorothy Moses Schulz and Kimberly Hassell (Aspen Publishing).

Dr. Archbold is currently involved in evaluations of a sexual abuse prevention program and a domestic violence prevention program provided to elementary school children in the Midwest. She is also studying the handling of sexual assault cases by police officers. In the fall of 2012, she will conduct a study of the impact of the oil “boom” on police agencies located in Western North Dakota.
