BLDC Machines comprehensively reviews the governing principles and operational implementation of this popular drive system, particularly focusing on rotor design and control system implementation in DSP and FPGA. The book exhaustively reviews the structure, principles of operation and the mathematical modeling of BLDC motors. It reviews current methods to connect windings, including star, delta and open-end winding, and discusses the relevant control methods involved. For each winding connection, their influence on the engine's properties is discussed in-depth. Thereafter, methods of detection points of commutation are discussed for both sensor and sensorless motors.

Finally, the problem of rotational speed estimation and methods of implementing a closed control system are evaluated.

Baszynski, Marcin
Marcin Baszynski received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland, in 2001 and 2008, respectively. Since 2006, he has been with the Department of Electrical Drive and Industrial Equipment, AGH University of Science and Technology, as an Assistant Professor. He works on the development of cosimulation tools in design of the power inverter control systems. His current research interests focus on power electronics, electrical power quality and high speed brushless motors drives. He is author of multiple research publications and patents. Most articles are devoted to BLDC machine control methods. Baszynski participated in three research projects devoted to the BLDC high-speed engine and he completed an internship at ABB Corporate Research Center. He was the manager of two research projects commissioned by ABB.
