This book studies switch-mode power supplies (SMPS) in greatdetail. This type of converter changes an unregulated DC voltageinto a high-frequency pulse-width modulated (PWM) voltagecontrolled by varying the duty cycle, then changes the PWM ACvoltage to a regulated DC voltage at a high efficiency byrectification and filtering. Used to supply electronic circuits,this converter saves energy and space in the overall system.
With concept-orientated explanations, this book offersstate-of-the-art SMPS technology and promotes an understanding ofthe principle operations of PWM converters, as well as enabling thereaders to evaluate their characteristics. Design-orientatedanalysis (including a steady-state analysis for both continuous anddiscontinuous conduction modes) and numerous real-world practicalexamples (including circuit models of the PWM converters)demonstrate how to design these from scratch.
The book provides an in-depth presentation of topologies of PWMDC-DC power converters, voltage- and current-mode control of PWMDC-DC power converters, considers power losses in allcomponents, device stresses, output voltage ripple, converterefficiency and power factor correction (PFC). It alsoincludes extensive coverage of the following:
* topologies of high-efficiency switching-mode PWM andsoft-switching DC-DC power converters;
* DC voltage transfer functions (conversion ratios), componentvalues, losses, efficiency, and stresses;
* small-signal averaged circuit models;
* current-mode and voltage-mode feedback controls;
* metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect power transistors(MOSFETs);
* silicon (Si) and silicon carbide (SiC) power semiconductordevices. Before now, there has been no book that covers siliconcarbide devices.
Pulse-width Modulated DC-DC Power Converters is acomprehensive textbook for senior undergraduate and graduatestudents in the areas of electrical, electronics, andtelecommunications engineering. It includes end-of-chapterreview questions, problems, and thorough summaries of the keyconcepts to aid learning, and a Solutions Manual isavailable for professors. Scientists and practicing designengineers working with SMPS, within such applications as computers,telecommunications, industrial systems, automobileelectronics, medical equipment, aerospace power technology, andradars (amongst others) will also find this text insightful.
