Wheat is one of the world’s most important crops and is a staple ingredient in the diets of millions of people around the world. However, it’s been estimated that around 20% of global wheat yields are lost to pests and diseases each year. As the agricultural sector faces growing pressure to reduce its reliance on chemical inputs, the development of integrated disease management programmes is gaining momentum as a sustainable alternative.

Advances in integrated wheat disease management provides a comprehensive overview of recent developments in understanding and monitoring major diseases affecting wheat, as well as methods for developing fungal and bacterial disease-resistant wheat varieties. The book also reviews the range of integrated management techniques used to prevent and/or control disease outbreaks, such as the use of bioprotectants, intercropping and crop rotations.

Dr. Nichola Hawkins is a plant pathologist at NIAB, Cambridge, UK. Her research combines evolutionary biology and functional genetics to address questions about evolutionary predictability, constraints and trade-offs, applied to the evolution of resistance against fungicides and other crop protection measures, focusing on fungal pathogens of arable crops.

Dr Stephen Wegulo is a Professor in the Department of Plant Pathology and Extension Specialist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, USA. His expertise is in the areas of epidemiology and disease management. Professor Wegulo has authored or co-authored 79 refereed journal papers, six book chapters and collectively more than 500 Extension and other non-refereed publications. He is currently an Editor-in-Chief of the journal Crop Protection and has previously served as an editor of three other refereed journals.

Cowger, Dr Christina
Dr. Christina Cowger is a small grains pathologist with the Agricultural Research Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and a professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina. Her research focuses on the epidemiology and sustainable management of diseases of wheat and barley, especially powdery mildew, Fusarium head blight, Septoria nodorum blotch (SNB), and barley yellow dwarf virus. Dr. Cowger has contributed to the identification of numerous sources of resistance to cereal diseases, as well as illuminating the etiology of those diseases and the population dynamics of the pathogens. She coordinates the USDA SNB screening nursery and is active in the US Wheat & Barley Scab Initiative.
