Fergus Millar’s works have renewed our approach of the Roman world. He had studied the functioning of the Roman Empire in the perspective of the Emperor’s activities, from Augustus to Constantine; as well as the Republic during the last two centuries BC in order to revalue the people within the institutions; and finally the Near East from Augustus to Constantine, and then to the Muslim conquest. He uses to be engaged with the whole evidence (literary, epigraphic, papyrological, juridical and archaeological) that he examines closely with revived view-points. Distinguished and younger scholars have dealt, during a seminar, with the main aspects of Millar’s research, its reception and the reactions it has raised, and proposed surveys about current inquiries, as well as perspectives for future studies.

Fergus Millar est l’auteur d’une œuvre historique renouvelant l’approche du monde romain. Il s’est consacré à trois domaines de recherche: le fonctionnement de l’empire romain à partir d’une analyse des activités de l’Empereur, d’Auguste à Constantin; l’étude de la res publica des deux derniers siècles avant notre ère, en réévaluant le rôle du peuple au sein des institutions; enfin, le Proche-Orient, d’Auguste à Constantin, puis jusqu’à la conquête musulmane. Sa méthode consiste en l’interrogation toujours à nouveaux frais des sources disponibles, littéraires, épigraphiques, papyrologiques, juridiques ou archéologiques. Ce volume réunit les interventions d’un séminaire visant à confronter une œuvre, son accueil et sa réception, ainsi que les réactions qu’elle a provoquées, en privilégiant les perspectives de renouvellement de ces dernières années.

Stéphane Benoist, D.Phil (1992, Paris-Sorbonne) and Habilitation (2001, Panthéon-Sorbonne), is Professor of Roman History at Lille-North of France University. He has published on imperial power, political discourses and conception of memory, festivals and ceremonies in the city of Rome.
