The 1992 reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) recognized the need for contributing to an environmentally sustainable form of agricultural production. Effects of CAP on the environment of the European Union are analysed in this book. Existing environmental requirements in agricultural policy are assessed, and environmental policies affecting agriculture are reviewed. Focus is on market and price policies, as well as on accompanying measures and structural policies.
Extensification of livestock production in response to the beef and sheep regimes has been limited so far. Usage of agro-chemicals to grow cereal crops reduced since the end of the 1980s. The Less Favoured Areas Policy may have a positive effect on lnadscape by maintaining a viable agricultural structure. Environmental issues however are better recognized in CAP than they were in the past. Environmental requirements presently are included in several Council Regulations.
