Semipalatinsk in eastern Kazakhstan was one of the largest and most influential of imperial Russia's Islamic religious and educational centers, but despite its stature, it is also the most poorly documented, at least in published sources.
The two manuscripts wich are being published and translated in this study are major and heretofore unknown sources for Islamic culture in imperial Russia in general, and for the city of Semipalatinsk in particular. They are primarily histories of Semipalatinsk's Muslim religious institutions: the city's mosques, madrasas and scholars, as well as the merchants who supported these institutions. The texts provide us with unparalleled information on the personalities who constituted this major Islamic cultural center and also with unique evidence on the scholarly and Sufi networks that linked Semipalatinsk and eastern Kazakhstan with the rest of the Islamic world.
