Johann Carl Bertram Stüve (1798–1872) was mayor of the city of Osnabrück und represented Osnabrück as deputy in the Estates Assembly (Ständeversammlung). Between 1848 and 1850, he was Minister of the Interior of the Kingdom of Hanover. As deputy in the Estates Assembly, Stüve initiated and promoted laws to remove financial burdens from the peasants (liberation of peasants). As Minister of the Interior, he asserted various reforms in the revolutionary years of 1848/1849. In addition to his state and local government offices, Stüve wrote numerous essays on historical developments and on state theory. These essays secured him an honourable place on the side of another great son of the city of Osnabrück – Justus Möser. This monograph shall remind.of Stüve's reforms and scientific contribution and underline his significance for the history of the kingdom of Hanover.
