Chapter 1 Leadership defined and
The Biblical offices of the church I’ve been a Deacon for over 30 years, teaching Sunday School, and training leaders in various positions in the church. God gave me the gift of teaching, so that’s what I do. This book is about understanding God’s expectation for excellence. When I make statements throughout the book, I’m going to provide the scriptures that back it up, so that you understand that this is something that God wants us to do. Most of us know that God called Pastors and we are there to assist them. I believe that leaders need a greater understanding of their position and how we are supposed to interact with them. I’ve never been called to preach but I’ve talked to many Pastors, ministers, preachers, evangelists, and most of them will allude to this particular scripture. Usually when God calls them, they say that He speaks to them similar to how He spoke to Jeremiah to assure them that He loved them even before he placed them in their mother’s womb, according to his Word. Jeremiah 1:4-5 King James Version 4 Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, 5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. There are other scriptural references where gifts and callings come without repentance. This means that you were born with whatever gift you have. He might have given some of us more gifts than others, but he gave everybody at least one. The calling on a person’s life can sometimes be seen by others even before the person sees it in himself. Even though they may not see it right away, the bible says it was there when you were born. Jeremiah 3:15 King James Version 15 And I will give you pastors according to mine heart, which shall feed you with knowledge and understanding. God gave us Pastors after his own heart, who will feed us with knowledge and understanding. Hopefully this book will provide you with greater understanding of what God is saying to us and what we’re supposed to be doing. In the Book of Proverbs, there are many references to gaining understanding that you might find useful. Proverbs 3:13 King James Version 13 Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. If we gain understanding, we’ll be happy. It’s not a good feeling to go on a job and they give you some tools, they put them in your hands, and you have no idea how to use them. You don’t understand what to do. When you don’t have a clear understanding, you just stand around and do nothing. This is what’s been taking place in many churches. We place our leaders in positions without adequately training them on what exactly they’re supposed to do; and how they’re supposed to govern themselves. When you’re unsure, you then start to lean on your own understanding; and God told us never do that. As Christian leaders we’re supposed to trust in the Lord with all of our heart’s and lean not to thy own understanding. Therefore, it is important that we get an understanding of what we’re supposed to do. Proverbs 4:5 King James Version 5 Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Some people would say that love is one of the most important things that we need in the body of Christ. And I agree that love is vital. But if you don’t understand love, then you won’t be able to love like God commanded. That’s why in all that we do, we need to be sure that we gain understanding. That’s what we are aiming to do in this book. We’re going to learn about Pastor’s in the Old Testament and the New Testament to find out why they needed help based on the scriptures and how we as leaders can truly help the Pastors. The Biblical Offices of the Church There are only two spiritual offices in the New Testament Church. The first office is Pastor, the second office is the Office of the Deacon. There are many other ministries and workers in leadership positions in the church. The first office of Pastor, whether it’s woman or man, is the overseer of the church. The Pastor is the only person that must give an account of every soul in the church through the Holy Spirit. As he or she designates deacons, we can give an account of what has been designated to us. Ultimately, everyone in that particular house of God is under the Pastor’s responsibility. We’re going to read more about that in the scriptures later. Many times, in churches when we don’t know what should be happening, we come in and start trying to speak or do things to direct the office of Pastor. Oftentimes, we don’t want to be told by the Pastor what to do, but that’s not the way it’s supposed to be. The Pastors are in charge. The only Word that is going to come from God on Sunday morning is going to come from the Pastor or someone that he or she has designated in spirit. Nobody can just walk up and start talking and preaching to his people. The Pastor is the Shepherd, he watches over his flock. God will equip him or her with what the flock needs. The Pastor may sometimes choose to give someone else an opportunity to speak. Often preachers or speakers will ask about how much time they’ve been given to speak. The Pastor can determine how much time he wants to allow a speaker to have on a program. If the Pastor states that they have fifteen minutes, and the speaker goes anything over fifteen minutes without first consulting with the Pastor, then they are out of order. Some might say that they are being led by the spirit to say more. But please know that the Spirit will agree with what is supposed to happen in that house of God. If he says fifteen minutes, then that’s what it is. Some people will grab a mic and just talk and talk. The Pastor is the one that gives the orders. I’ve seen it happen many times where a minister will come, and he’ll have so much to say. He will look back at the Pastor and ask if he could go ahead and go beyond the designated time. If the Pastor says you have to cut it, then you have to cut it off. That’s the Spirit leading that house. You can’t say that you’re in the Spirit, and you’re going against what was designated by the Shepherd of the house. God is always in order. And the order of the house is determined by the Pastor or whomever he or she designates. This is just the way that it is. We’re getting an understanding of the way God’s house should be so that when we are chosen, we know how to govern ourselves accordingly. Now, the Pastor was chosen as we saw in Jeremiah; but remember that God is a God of order and he knows exactly what it’s going to take for the Pastor. He chooses people by the Spirit, He touches the heart of the Pastor, and the Pastor will choose his people. I want to clarify that throughout the book, I may refer to the Pastor as ‘He.” However, when I say ‘he’, I am referring to he or she. I’m referring to the neutral gender of whomever God has in charge. God will call his Pastors and instruct them on what to do. And they will tell everyone else what to do. As long as we work this way, the vision of the house will go forth. The Pastor will receive the vision of the house from God. Any other vision coming forth, will be a division. This is the way God has it. God said that He gives us Pastors after his own heart with wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. They will share it with us. The just shall live by faith. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God. As you read and study God’s Word, it’s important to know that Jesus’s custom was to go to the temple and read the Word of God. So, if Jesus did this, and He is our example; we need to come to the temple. God has not ordained it for us to do everything ourselves. You can do your own self studying, in addition to coming to hear the Word from your church. But there is a way that God has for us and a place that he wants for us to be. He wants you to be diligent. He knows everything about you, he knew that you were going to be in your place. He knew what he was going to put on your Pastors, He had to choose you to get into a leadership position. When you get into the position, you must know how to act. This is a holy thing dealt by the Holy Spirit. We’ve got to serve Him in spirit and in truth. There’s some things that we can’t bring into leadership because we must lead by...
