On July 1, 2017, Canada celebrated the 150th anniversary of Confederation. The nation-wide festivities prompted ambiguous reactions and contradictory responses since they officially proclaimed to celebrate “what it means to be Canadian.” Drawing on the analytical perspectives of Diversity Studies, this fifth volume of the “Diversity / Diversité / Diversität” series explores the repercussions of “Canada 150’s” focus on identity. The contributions touch upon issues of Canada’s French and English dualism; of its settler colonial past and present and the role of Indigenous Peoples in Canada’s identity narrative; of Canada’s religious, cultural, ethnic and racial diversity; and of the challenge of forging a “Canadian” identity. The authors analyze these and other problems arising from the tensions between identity and diversity by empirically addressing topics such as multicultural memories, Canadian literary and political discourses, Métis history, Canada’s Indigenous peoples, Canada’s official federal discourse on language and culture, and Canada’s evolving citizenship regimes.

Ursula Lehmkuhl is Professor of International History at the University of Trier and director of the International Research Training Group Diversity: Mediating Difference in Transcultural Spaces. Her research interests include migration history, colonial
history, environmental history, and the history of international relations. She has published several books, among them Pax Anglo-Americana: Machtstrukturelle Grundlagen anglo-amerikanischer Asien- und Fernostpolitik in den 1950er Jahren (1999), From Enmity to Friendship: Anglo-American Relations in the 19th and 20th Century (2005) (co-edited with Gustav Schmidt), Historians and Nature: Comparative

McFalls, Laurence
Laurence McFalls is Professor of Political Science at Université de Montréal as well as director of the Centre canadien d’études allemandes et européennes and of the International Research Training Group Diversity: Mediating Difference in Transcultural
Spaces. His research interests include social theory, German politics and culture since re-unification, GDR history and memory politics, Max Weber, Michel Foucault, and the emergence of new modes of therapeutic domination. His recent books are Construire le politique: causalité, contingence et connaissance (2006) and
Max Weber’s ‘Objectivity’ Reconsidered (2007). Together with Mariella Pandolfi, he has published numerous articles and book chapters offering a critical analysis of contemporary humanitarian and neoliberal politics.

Beaulieu, Marie-Eve
Marie-Eve Beaulieu is a Quebec-based educator of Settler ancestry. She holds a B.A. from the Université du Québec à Montréal, an M.A. from the Université de Montréal, and a PhD in Education from the University of Trier, Germany. As members of her Franco-Canadian family were involved in the residential school’s project of Indigenous assimilation, she is interested in the transformation of Settler identity in a time of growing awareness for Indigenous oppression.
