Focusing on the themes of politics, war and diplomacy through the remarkable career of Henri de Massue, Marquis de Ruvigny and later earl of Galway, this book explores the complex interactions between French, English and Irish politics following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685.

Beginning with an outline of Ruvigny's diplomatic missions to England whilst in the service of Louis XIV, the book examines the dealings of France, the United Provinces and England during the third Anglo-Dutch war, and his subsequent decision to shift allegiance and become a trusted friend of William III following the Revocation of the edict of Nantes. Subsequent chapters then shed light on European relations and their impact on national politics, and the theme of the Protestant International, Huguenot diaspora and Huguenot involvement in war in this period. In particular the book explores Ruvigny’s military and diplomatic career in the service of William III, his role as ambassador to Victor Amadeus II, Duke of Savoy, and his service as an administrator in Dublin Castle where he took a leading role in the government of Ireland as de facto viceroy. The final part of the study explores Galway’s fall from grace in 1711 as the Tory government endeavoured to settle scores with the previous Whig government, before being reinstated by the new Hanoverian regime who brought him back to Ireland, where he served as Lord Justice between the critical years 1715-1717. His return to the Irish political scene is also examined in its broader context of British anxieties of the Jacobite rising, and of the consolidation of Ireland as part of the British Empire since the Glorious Revolution.

Drawing upon a wealth of hitherto underutilized French, English and Irish sources, this book goes beyond simple biography and the limitations of national history. Through the lens of Galway’s career, it offers a fascinating insight in the ways that early-modern European states used politics, war and diplomacy to achieve their ambitions.
