Symposium M was presented at the combined 1997 International Conference on Applied Materials/European Materials Research Society Spring meeting (ICAM'97/E-MRS'97) held in Strasbourg (France) from 16-20 June 1997. Molecular materials and devices are reaching a maturity level in terms of fabrication technologies, stability-lifetime issues and functional properties, as well as in the basic understanding of their properties, that increasingly captures the attention of wider circles of the scientific and industrial communities. Electroluminescent polymers are at the fore-front of this upsurge of interest in view of recent breakthroughs in the fields of displays or light emission. Considerable progress was reported at this meeting in terms of operational lifetime and long term stability, in particular at polymermetal interfaces under electron or hole injection conditions.

The aim of this Symposium was to provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of new work in the field. More than eighty papers reflecting broad and intense activity in the field have been gathered in the proceedings.
