Europe shares a large part of the world pig population (about 30 %) as well as of the world pig genetic diversity (about 37 % of the breeds in the world inventory). The necessity to maintain diversity and develop alternative stocks for meeting a wide variety of production/market conditions is recognised, as well as the ensuing need to establish sound conservation programmes. This book presents an overview of the situation of the pig genetic resources in four major pig producing countries of the European Union: France, Germany, Italy and Spain. The information gathered is intended to form the basis for rationalising the conservation of European pig genetic resources, through a better characterisation of the breeds available and an evaluation of their genetic diversity. Conservation policies are also outlined, addressing both live animals and cryopreserved germplasm, and in particular recommendations are given for establishing gene banks from local breeds at serious risk of genetic erosion. The 12 chapters of this book contain contributions from a large number of European experts in the field of pig production and genetics, conservation genetics and reproductive physiology. The book should thus be of interest to a wide audience throughout the pig industry. In addition, the economic dimension given to the various conservation strategies should be of some benefit to decision-makers in the field of domestic animal conservation under European conditions.
