Welche Rolle spielt der Heilige Geist bei der Ermöglichung ethischen Lebens bei Paulus? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage diskutiert Volker Rabens zunächst einen religionsgeschichtlichen Ansatz, nach dem der Geist als eine stofflich-materielle Substanz zu verstehen ist, deren Empfang den Menschen naturhaft-ontisch transformiert und so zu ethischem Verhalten befähigt. In der zweiten Hälfte der Arbeit stellt er einen neuen, relationalen Ansatz vor. Die zentrale These lautet, dass nach Paulus der Geist den Menschen näher zu Gott und zum Mitmenschen zieht, um so das ethische Leben zu ermöglichen. In der geistgewirkten, vertrauten Beziehung zu Gott, zu Jesus Christus sowie zur Glaubensgemeinde werden Christen transformiert und ermächtigt, um nach den Werten des Evangeliums leben zu können.
