The aim of this book is to present a specific framework for dealing with recurring translation problems in a number of genres that are frequently translated. On the basis of illustrative sample texts, the decisions taken in the production of the target texts are commented on in the light of the specified translation assignments. The texts are grouped according to types and genres and the annotations provide a detailed account of relevant translation decision-making processes. The readership of this book is primarily students of translation and novices in the field. The texts, and in particular, the annotations, may be used by translator trainers in classroom situations. Practising translators may also find this book helpful. By focusing on recurring translation problems and illustrating the translation strategies applied, the book demonstrates that critical reflection on a translation assignment will help translators make informed decisions.

Schäffner, Christina
Christina Schäffner is Professor Emerita at Aston University, Birmingham. Until her retirement in September 2015 she was the Head of Translation Studies at Aston, teaching courses in translation studies, interpreting, and supervising Master dissertations and PhD students.  Her main research interests are: political discourse in translation, news translation, metaphor in translation, and translation didactics, and she has published widely on these topics. Major publications include Political Discourse, Media and Translation (edited with S. Bassnett 2010), Translation research and Interpreting research: Traditions, gaps and synergies (2004) and Politics as Text and Talk. Analytic Approaches to Political Discourse (edited with P. Chilton, 2002).

Christina Schäffner is a senior lecturer in the School of Languages and European Studies at Aston University (Birmingham, UK), Co-director of the Institute for the Study of Language and Society, and Secretary General of the European Society for Translation Studies. Her main research interests are translation studies, political discourse, textlinguistics, and metaphors. Her publications include Language and Peace (co-edited with Anita Wenden, 1995), Cultural Functions of Translation (co-edited with Helen Kelly-Holmes, 1995), Conceiving of Europe - Diversity in Unity? (co-edited with Andreas Musolff and Michael Townson, 1996), Translation and Quality (ed., 1997), Translation and Norm (ed.,1999) and articles in various journals.
