Several Byzantine manuscripts, mostly dating into the 10th and 11th centuries, transmit a corpus of ancient manuals on building siege engines and artillery devices. A collection of technical illustrations accompanies this corpus. In the different manuscripts it features a peculiar variance in transmission of schematic and representational machine illustrations. Their development is followed through picture analysis and examination of manuscript tradition and will be understood within the context of the reception of ancient military technological literature in Byzantium. Eventually, a comparison with late medieval machine books further pursues the question of a potential reception of Byzantine machine illustrations.
