The estimation of global motion parameters in video sequences has applications in many fields. For this thesis, the estimation of map motion in navigation video sequences is of primary interest. The final goal is to achieve significant rate savings when using such motion parameters within a modified video codec. This thesis thus sets out to solve five essential challenges for navigation sequences:
- Estimation of precise map motion parameters
- Estimation of map motion parameters under difficult conditions
- Integration strategy into a video codec like HEVC/H.265
- Integration of the overall solution into a larger framework
- Fulfillment of given real-time processing requirements
The designed compression solution offers a precise and yet fast estimation of the higher-order motion of the navigation map, while achieving significant bitrate reductions. The developed modules are widely open for configuration, scale adaptively to the available CPU resources, and are successfully in use for a variety of automotive testing scenarios.
