Williams, Melvin
Melvin Williams is the Director of Human Performance Laboratory at Old Dominion University, and has more than 30 years of lab research with a focus on the role of nutrition in sports. He has written and edited five books on ergogenic aids and the role of nutrition in sports -- his two latest books are The Ergogenics Edge: Pushing the Limits of Sports Performance (Human Kinetics) and Nutrition for Health, Fitness, and Sports, Sixth Edition (McGraw-Hill). He earned a B.S. from East Stroudsburg State College (1962), a Master of Education degree from Ohio University (1963), and a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland (1968), with a doctoral dissertation on the effects of alcohol as a possible means to enhance strength and endurance. He's an accomplished marathon runner, placing first in his age group numerous times in the Marine Corps Marathon, which merited his selection in the Marine Corps Marathon Hall of Fame in 2001.

Mel Williams is an Eminent Scholar Emeritus at Old Dominion University. He received his Ph. D. in Physical Education and Exercise Science from the University of Maryland, immediately joining the faculty at Old Dominion University in Norfolk in 1968. While at ODU he founded the Human Performance Laboratory and the Wellness Institute and Research Center. His main teaching focus was exercise physiology and sports nutrition at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Over the years his major research focus has been the effect of performance enhancing substances, or ergogenic aids, in sport, including many nutritional ergogenics. He has an extensive research publication record, has presented invited lectures throughout the United States and in 25 countries worldwide, and has published over 20 books including Drugs and Athletic Performance and Beyond Training: How Athletes Enhance Performance Legally and Illegally. His textbook, Nutrition for Health, Fitness, & Sport is currently in its 11th edition and has been adopted by universities throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries. His books have been translated and published internationally in ten different languages. He is also the founding editor of the International Journal of Sport Nutrition.A few personal notes: Mel was born and raised in Kingston, Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, he joined the United States Army as a paratrooper, and served as a medical corpsman for three years. He then earned his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education at East Stroudsburg State Teachers College and Masters degree at Ohio University. He taught several years in Reading, Pennsylvania and the pursued his doctorate at Maryland. He competed in football and wrestling in high school and college, and coached several years at both the high school and university level. He is married to Jeanne Kruger and has a daughter, Serena with two grandsons, Daniel and David, and a stepdaughter Sara, with grandchildren Katy, Lucy, and Jake. Mel is committed to maintaining a high level of fitness for both health and sports competition. He has completed more than 125 marathons and ultramarathons, has won his age group in the Boston Marathon three times, has completed 38 Marine Corps Marathons, and has also completed the Kona Ironman Triathlon. Although his sport competitive days are over, he still maintains an active exercise program and healthy diet in attempts to maximize health.
