Chapter 1
Project New World The battle raged on around Darius as he began trying to sneak away, but Rafficer saw him. With an angry growl, the old vampire decided to take his youngling down. Rushing from the other side of the room, Rafficer caught Darius just before the 652-year-old vampire could make it through the door to outside. Darius was startled and let out a soft cry while backing away from Rafficer’s furious green eyes. He was trapped between Rafficer’s arm and the wall that he backed into. Darius watched as the older vampire laughed and felt a chill run down his spine. Rafficer’s eyes betrayed his intentions to Darius, and it would be painful. As always, he began with a little taunting. “Where are you going, Daredevil?” Rafficer asked in a higher-than-thou tone. Darius gave a half-hearted laugh at his nickname and bravely looked at Rafficer’s face. His fear was hiding behind his defiant sky-blue eyes. Rafficer’s green eyes narrowed. Originally, he thought that Darius had started this battle, but seeing the youngling try and run, he wondered who really did start the battle. Darius knows, Rafficer thought to himself. He wasn’t going to let him escape. “Anywhere but here, Raff!” Darius cried as he tried to feint moving left but actually moved right. Rafficer saw the move coming and caught Darius’s throat in his left hand. Even though Darius knew he could survive the attack on his neck, human instincts made him panic and grip onto Rafficer’s arm. The 721-year-old vampire laughed at Darius’s useless attempt. Darius shook his head, looking for a weakness in the grip. Rafficer had him, and Darius wouldn’t be able to stop anything his sire tried next. Using his vampire strength, Rafficer lifted Darius off the ground and slammed his back into the wall. Darius let out a grunt but made no other noise. “I made you, Darius! I taught you everything you know!” Rafficer snapped at Darius. Green eyes glared hard into defiant sky-blue ones as Darius hung from Rafficer’s hand. Rafficer could see that this was going to get him nowhere, so he switched tactics. Slowly, Rafficer leaned forward, his black hair melding with Darius’s hair, which was dyed black. Darius prepared himself for everything. He wasn’t going to let Rafficer get away with whatever he was planning. “Do you regret what I turned you into, Darius?” “IDONA!” screamed a loud, high-pitched female voice. Idona jumped in the air out of fright, somehow still holding onto the book she was reading, as her wild brownish-green eyes landed on a pair of shiny chocolate-brown eyes. It took a minute for Idona to calm down and recognize the person standing beside her. Idona sighed when she realized that it was her roommate, Minnie. Minnie’s face held a rather large and innocent smile as though she had done nothing wrong. “Why’d ya have ta yell at me, Minnie?” Idona asked, dropping into slang. She really wasn’t in the mood to play. Her eyes rolled over Minnie’s feminine frame once more. Idona resigned herself to the fact that she was simply average; her voice was deeper and more robust than most girls’ were, her build was almost masculine but her large chest made up for her otherwise manly appearance. Idona was not fat, she weighed only 162 lbs, which was a little overweight for her 5’3” frame, but it suited her. Her dark chocolate-brown hair was short and dangled over her ears and neck. Idona worked out every day, not just to keep her weight in check, but because she liked to exercise. She certainly wasn’t the “feminine” type at all. Currently, Idona’s clothes didn’t really show off anything. She was wearing a band (Santagata) T-shirt, two sizes too large, and a pair of men’s shorts that reached her knees. “Cause you didn’t hear me the first five times I called you,” Minnie answered with a soft giggle. Minnie’s voice matched the slim curvature of her body in a way that showed she was pure female. She had waist-length curly blond hair that was almost always tied in a ponytail with two hair ties, almost like Princess Jasmine from Disney’s Aladdin, which was Minnie’s favorite movie. The girl weighed almost as much as Idona, sometimes she varied five pounds in either direction, but her weight was usually constant. It was just enough for her 5’5” height, something that Minnie loved showing off to Idona and other chubby girls at the school. Today, she wore a tight white sleeveless shirt and a pair of slim fitting shorts that covered very little. Idona thought that the shorts were a second pair of underwear. “Five times, eh? You still haven’t beaten Sue’s tolerance of seven?” Idona inquired. Sue was the Resident Advisor (RA) for their floor. Sue was feminine like a model. She had a perfect height of 5’7” and weighed almost nothing. It often worried others because she seemed a little too thin. So like Idona, she used to wear clothes much too big for her size. “Not yet, but I’m getting closer. So, what’cha reading?” Minnie asked, pulling a wooden chair from under Idona’s desk and promptly sitting on it backward. Leaning against the backrest, Minnie waited. Idona rolled her eyes. She knew that Minnie didn’t really care. It was just bland conversation. After most of the year had gone by at school, the two had realized that they didn’t really have much in common other than their majors. They both were pursuing an English degree. Minnie added Theater to it, and Idona added History so they used to be busy with classes and homework. “Nothing much really,” Idona answered as she began scanning the bed for her bookmark. Minnie rolled her eyes before leaning over to the side and picking the bookmark off the floor. She handed it to Idona and tried again. “I mean, what is it called?” Idona could tell that Minnie thought that the book was homework related. Surprisingly, even though Minnie was bad at remembering names and dates, she was interested in History. “Project New World,” Idona responded as she took the bookmark and placed it inside the book. Looking over the last line that she remembered reading, Idona committed it to memory. Despite how much she wanted to, she knew that she might not get back to reading that night. “Project New World? Never heard of it,” Minnie said as she tried to flip the book and read the back cover for the summary. Idona held the back cover up to make it easier for her. Minnie mouthed a “thanks” and started to read it. Idona rolled her eyes; she didn’t want to wait for Minnie to complete reading. “It’s about a group of vampires that don’t like humans and are trying to get rid of them. Whether it’s by turning the humans into vamps or by simply killing them.” “Doesn’t sound very entertaining,” Minnie made a face and got off the chair in an attempt to head to her bed. Idona smiled because she knew that Minnie didn’t care for vampire novels, but often, she secretly peeked at Idona’s novels. Many of those books were sitting on the top shelf of Idona’s desk. They ranged from Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Charlaine Harris’s Sookie Stackhouse novels. “But there is a vampire, Darius, on the inside trying to stop the group. Sadly the group’s leader is Darius’s sire, so it’s hard for him to fight back...,” Idona explained while thinking of Darius. She felt so bad for him. He had so many things happen to him in the course of his life with Rafficer, but he still couldn’t escape. How she just wished she could take him away from Rafficer forever so that he might begin to have an easier life. “Whoa! You lost me at sire,” Minnie replied as she flopped onto her bed. Idona sat up to face Minnie. She forgot a lot that Minnie wasn’t into vampires and didn’t know about vampire folklore. “Sire means the vampire that made you. Your sire also is the one who can control you into doing things.” “Oh. Can’t he just say no? Or better yet, can’t he just kill this sire guy?” “In most stories, the author has it that if the vampire is strong enough mentally, he can say no. Sometimes, a few vamps have the sire killed off. This author, so far, hasn’t done either. I think she’s making it that, after a certain amount of years the underling is free from his sire. But I haven’t read enough of the series to find out,” Idona mentioned as her eyes focused on the two other books she owned of said series. Only three out of the entire series had been released. “Series? This is a series?” Minnie asked as she sat up fast. Facing Idona in shock, Minnie just stared. “You are kidding, right?” “No. Actually, this is the third book in the series. The series is called “Project” and each book has a different project. The first book was Project Old Life, and the second was Project New Knowledge. This one, well, you know what it’s called,” Idona stated excitedly. Minnie rolled her eyes and leaned back to lie down....
