Fracture Testing for Fibre-Reinforced Composites demonstrates how to implement the most effective experimental methodologies for measuring interlaminar and intralaminar damage propagation in order to characterize the corresponding fracture toughness parameters. The book presents a concise overview of the existing background theories of composites, including a full chapter on the fundamentals of fracture mechanics, followed by in-depth, step-by-step practical guidance for executing a variety of fracture toughness experimental tests.

Also included are optical and thermal data acquisition techniques, as well as relevant data reduction and uncertainty quantification methods to facilitate rapid and objective measurement of the material parameters when obtained for both quasi-static and dynamic loading regimes.

Catalanotti, Giuseppe
Giuseppe Catalanotti was an Early Research Scientist within the MOMENTUM project and received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Porto in 2011. In the same year, he left Alstom Transport and joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Porto as Post-Doctoral Research Associate. In 2016 he joined, as Lecturer, the Advanced Composite Research Group (ACRG) at the Queen's University Belfast. In April 2021 he joined the University of Evora as an Associate Professor with the task of opening a new course on aerospace engineering. He has been involved in several projects funded by the European Commission and by the aeronautic industry, is the author or co-author of dozens of peer-reviewed articles publishing in high impact journals, and he has been supervisor of dozen of PhD students.

Dalli, Denis
Denis Dalli completed his PhD in 2020 having performed an extensive study on the experimental and numerical aspects of composite crashworthiness modeling, in collaboration with McLaren Racing. He is currently researching the development of CNT-web based inserts for use in innovative welding techniques of thermoplastic composites. He was recently awarded a Horizon 2020 Widening Fellowship to move to the University of Porto for a 2-year project focusing on experimental and numerical developments towards carbon neutral composite crashworthiness. His scientific publications have focused on the development of novel experimental characterization techniques for carbon fibre composite materials, as well as composite crashworthiness.
