Appreciated within a historico-philological frame, citations, allusions, and cognate phenomena – usually subsumed under intertextuality – are purposeful references from one text to another. That is to say, the author of a text which cites another text or alludes to it wants the reader to bring that reference text, in whichever way, to bear on the understanding of the newly produced one. Therefore, in analyzing intertextual compositions, both production and reception should be borne in mind. While this applies generally, in the Hebrew Bible and beyond, it is particularly true in the realm of Pentateuchal traditions, which are the focus of the present issue. It contains a collection of studies analyzing textual references from or to a specific Pentateuchal text, or within the Pentateuch.
