Why do bad people get ahead? Should I make the right choice or the easy choice? What makes a good person different than a bad one? Questions like these have been confusing and confounding people for as long as there have been people. They say,'What goes around, comes around,'but they don't show it in their actions. So why not? Another way of asking the question is: why do people do the wrong thing when they are confronted with making a choice, saying something hurtful, or acting out. Why don't they remember that what goes around comes around? In this book, you will learn the following: • How this concept is actually a law of physics, no different than gravity or electricity or the turning of the tides • What examples prove this truth, good and bad • How it places in your own hands the key to either successful living or a life of regret • How you can make it operate to your benefit and that of your loved ones • And most importantly, how it works and how it can work for you. If you know definitively the importance what your effect is on others, you can step on to a new path -- one that will be more fulfilling -- for the rest of your life.

The Time Factor This may be the most important part of this entire effort as it addresses the vexing question of why it appears that many people never get caught or punished for their evil doings? It is the question that messes the most with people’s minds when it comes to getting their arms around accepting the premise of this book, that “What goes Around Comes Around.” Why, they may rightfully ask, is it true that in nature when a seed is planted, it is very precise when the bloom will appear. But in the human experience in which the seeds planted are thoughts, words, and actions, the rightful consequences may take a very long time to appear, or even seemingly never appear? Why aren’t humans, it can logically be asked, subject to the same laws of nature as all other living creatures? Let’s go straight to it! Is it true that some people can get away with doing bad things without being subjected to appropriate consequences? It’s not like this is the first time this question has ever been posed. Not at all. It is one of those universal stumpers that have plagued humankind from our inception. So its not surprising that it should still be doing so now. There are teachings, ancient and more recent which surmise that the consequences for a person’s actions in this life may not appear until the next lifetime, or that they will be visited upon the perpetrator’s children and their children. Whoa! Going there is way too esoteric for this treatise, which is solely concerned with is what happens in this lifetime! Though it must be acknowledged that this is one of those questions that no living being, now or ever, truly knows the answer to, the clearest and most cogent explanation I’ve ever found, comes from the person many consider to be the greatest poet and philosopher in America’s history, Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was in reading his magnificent essay on Compensation that I had my first glimpse of how the issue at hand works. It resonated with me and was very helpful in formulating the views expressed herein. He states: “Though no checks to a new evil appear, the checks exist, and will appear.” “Every secret is told, every crime is punished, every virtue rewarded, every wrong redressed, in silence and certainty!” “The retribution is inseparable from the thing, but is often spread over a long time, and so may not become distinct until much time has passed. However, the offense and the punishment grow out of one stem. Cause and Effect, Means and Ends, Seeds and Fruit, cannot be severed, for the Effect already blooms in the Cause.” “Life invests itself with inevitable conditions, which the unwise seek to dodge, or say they do not know, or that they do not touch them. But they do!” These are all tidbits of Emersonian, philosophical, insight. However, still missing is the why? Emerson and others have readily observed that much water can flow under the bridge before a wrong gets righted. But why? The answer lies hidden right beneath our noses, out of view in plain sight. It is so simple, yet as it relates to this issue, we just don’t see it, and miss the truth right in front of us. What I speak of is the very quality that makes humans different from all other living creatures, namely the gift of choice! This is not a subject that any one of us has never heard about, talked about or exercised as their freedom to make choices. We think about what to do and then do it. We say, “I choose to go to the beach, or the bar, or out dancing or to bed early. It is this very significant ability to make choices that provide us with the facility to go with or against the crowd, the gift to chart our own course regardless of the opinions and beliefs of others, to break the limited thinking and boundaries that others erect and want to control us with, or importantly, to choose not to do so. We call it a gift, a good thing, a blessing, a privilege, and properly employed that is true! But there is another side to it. Having the ability to choose -- freedom of choice -- also means that one can choose to use that gift to lie and misdirect, to deceive and obfuscate, to use one’s intelligence, charm and cleverness to do everything possible to put off the consequences of the seeds they’ve planted, to some future time. Emerson says, the offense and the punishment grow out of the same stem, but the retribution may be spread over time. That’s right! There’s your answer! Some people are just better than others – more clever at covering their tracks – scarier at intimidating witnesses – more able to pay people off. Just like every other skill or sport or art form, there are infinite gradations of ability that people have or cultivate to achieve their goal. Watch twenty-five different TED talks, and you’ll see twenty-five different levels of speech-making ability. Why would lying and cheating be any different. It is also true that only humans have the ability to take duplicity to levels we could never expect, and as we repeatedly witness in crystal clarity, many do! Yes, its true that people can use their intelligence and freedom to make their own choices and maneuver away from consequences for some indeterminate period of time, depending on their level of skill. But the iron rule is, that whether entertainment figure, clergy, sports hero, professor, doctor, elected official or some other brand of villain, the longer they obfuscate, lie, cheat and evade, the deeper the hole that they dig for themselves. We’ll explore this further in a moment. There’s no question that it is very difficult and disconcerting to know someone who does bad things, particularly if it’s personal and you have felt the sting, to wholly accept the idea that what goes around comes around. Emerson tells us that the retribution is inseparable from the thing, but is often spread over a long time frame. In fact, we are living through a period in which retribution after many years of offending behavior is on display everywhere we look. Events are confirming that every wrong is rectified in its apparently, appropriate time frame. Further that the factor differentiating one time frame from another is the talent of the offender to hide out in the shadows for a shorter or longer period than some other villain. But as suggested earlier, when the light shines and the shadow disappears, all is revealed, including how deep the pit. To think about that in another way, consider these examples: Example 1 - You and I have just met and you are in the middle of explaining something about yourself that is obviously important to you. Suddenly and without warning, I turn and walk away from you without an explanation, leaving you dumbfounded as to what just happened. A few minutes later, someone approaches you and asks, “Hey I saw you speaking to that guy Rob Davis. What kind of a person is he?” What are you likely to say? Probably at best it would be something like, “Well we just met and I don’t really know him. Can’t give you much insight.” But at worst, you might say, “The guy’s a real jerk. Stay away from him!” Now suppose that moments after walking away, I come back to you and say, “Oh gosh, I’m so sorry. Just as we were starting to speak, I saw someone I needed to give an urgent message to, and have been trying to reach for days. But my goodness, that was so rude of me to just walk away like that without an explanation. I’m really sorry. Can you please let me off the hook for that. Could we just start that conversation over again? Honestly, I’m really interested in what you were saying?” Our conversation goes on for 15-20 minutes and ends with our agreement to meet for lunch the following week. Now that same person comes over to you and asks, “Hey, I saw you speaking to that guy Rob Davis. What kind of person is he?” What are you likely to say now? Probably something quite different from the last example, and that difference would have hinged on the decision I made to come back to you and correct my blunder. What if I had not done that and had just left it to fester, and you were asked your opinion about me say a month, or six months, or a year later. Would your opinion of me have improved? Not likely! Probably the opposite. Left unaddressed, it most likely would have festered and deteriorated further with time, not improved. But in this example, I did correct it and was able by doing so, to minimize the damage that could have been caused by my mindlessness. Of course, if I were to do it again...not good! It would be much more difficult to repair the next time. So it goes... Immediately addressed, even problematic issues can be, at least to some extent, resolved. It’s the choice of the perpetrator of the offending action, to either mitigate their blunder or...
