This special issue discusses the relation between evolutionary changes in feeding and drinking motor patterns in tetrapods and the changes in the organization of the neural substrate that produces these motor patterns. Evidence from movement analysis, electromyography of tongue and jaw muscles, neural mechanisms and reticular premotor circuits is used to examine, whether the emergence of new mechanisms depends on changes in peripheral structures or on changes of the neural substrate. The available data suggest that both peripheral and central structures are prone to evolutionary modifications. Providing in-depth discussions by leading scientists in the field, this publication will be rewarding reading for neurobiologists, functional morphologists, zoologists and behavioral biologists interested in the evolution of motor mechanisms and motor control.
