Chapter 2
The woman in the dark world
The night was dark and cold, no stars could be seen. The earth trembled and ashes and smoke were heavy in the air. A mighty cry was heard from a baby. So it was when she was born. The Irondaughter. Your name shall be Avaha Alessia Emese Irondaughter of the house of Iron her mother said. What a strange name her father replied. For in their land such elegance and positivity was not heard in names. Her best friends were both born the same night. Lyssa of Steel and Deirdre “Sorrow” of Darkcloud. Growing up she would learn all the war arts, she would be given no quarter in training nor ask. She was of a lower noble house. The clans referred to themselves as houses. Her power became immense. Yesterday she had been training. Something seemed to be radiating out from her and the sky grew darker as she squeezed the grip of her black sword and raised it. She delivered the cut to a rock, as high and wide as a door is. The rock was divided into two equal parts as it broke in half. She then proceeded to backflip almost double her own height into the air, and push of an old tree that fell over, and land in front of Lyssa. The two then proceeded to fence with unbelievable Precision, power, and speed. After an hour they were tired and finally held up. It was now next morning and Avaha woke up. She had been sleeping on a brits of dark marble with no pillows or mattresses, only a blanket of old sackcloth. Everything felt cold and although the sun was high in the sky it somehow seemed gloomy. She went to the mirror and combed her hair, dark straight long, her eyes piercing blue, Lyssas were an equally piercing green. Avaha then draped her pale skin in black silk and thought: time for breakfast. Avaha took out a piece of meat from a stone box and ate. She then washed it down with stale humid water from an iron cup. No time to waste she thought dropped her robe of silk and put on a sturdier fabric. She then put on her armour piece by piece. It was heavy and spiked, made from a dark shade of iron. She strapped her sword to her side and allowed her hair to fall free down her back reaching her waist. She walked out and looked around. The air smelled of ashes and little black flakes fell from the sky like snow. A fog rested on the land and in the distance the black wall. Beyond it a dark wasteland that then passed into light. The dark land expanded slowly but surely and once peaceful villages now laid within its border. Further inland a dark city and within it a tall dark castle. There in lived the Darkness clan with their leader, king Ubel the evil. Avaha´s house was just outside the city, and carved from stone with a large gate, yet only a single hall. The rest of her family lived in the city just a quick walk away. She walked to the city and was hailed by the guards: Avaha of Iron! They parted their halberds and struck their chests, bowed and stepped aside. She walked through. Lyssa of Steel! Avaha turned around. The guards now fell to the ground bowing deeply before her. Dark morning, said Avaha Dark morning Avaha, Replied Lyssa. Never darker than in my presence said a voice… Deirdre of Darkcolud! As the guards bowed, she kicked one lightly in the head and smiled. Her iris was yellow with a red ring. Her hair was up in levels as high as her head in total and at the very top a knot from where a ponytail hanged down to her shoulders. Her weapon a frightening combination of tongi-axe and a spiked mace. Her black armour covered in sharp blades. She took a few steps forward and continued: Dark morning, let’s get going. They started walking down the main street. Around them people focused on their various crafts and dared not look up. Avaha was head of seventh infantry company. Lyssa administrator and Deirdre… She was a General serving directly under the evil king Ubel. Lyssa said: The amount of equipment has doubled In the last year alone and the dark kingdom has expanded even further. Ubel has also started harsh policies of torture and taxation against the villages under his domain. I know answered Deirdre, Who do you think carries it out? Haha. Avaha replied: Seventh company will soon be ready for war. As Lyssa and Deirdre continued talking Avaha looked up at the great Castle. It´s walls steep, black, and uninviting. Are you listening!? Deirdre looked at her, I said I want the company ready by tomorrow for a test. Of course, they will be ready Avaha replied. Deirdre continued… I will soon be the most powerful of all, As first general I will conquer all and when I’m done… Deirdre leaned in and whispered: I will kill Ubel take my rightful place as queen of all darkness. Then she let out a deep laugh Hahahaha. But first I must complete my journey to become first general. They reached a crossing. I guess this is where we part said Lyssa and headed straight forward. Indeed, said Deirdre and went right up towards the castle. See you after work said Avaha and headed left to the barracks and training grounds. She reached the 7th training ground. It had a wall around it as high as a very tall person and a large gate. Inside a large open area with weapons-racks along the walls and a house on a low plateau with stairs for the master of training. Avaha opened the gate and entered. Hail lady Avaha! The warriors struck their chests in a salute and formed a square immediately. We have much to do started Avaha. Tomorrow general Deirdre has decided you will be tested. There was an enthusiasm spreading in the formation as they had been training in terrible conditions for a year. Each trooper had a dark armour with large shoulder guards, each right shoulder guard carrying the inscription “House of Iron”. The most loyal would carry an ice blue ring on their left index finger symbolizing the blue in Avahas’ eyes. Others would paint a blue line on their armour. Among Lyssas troops some would do the same with green amulets while Deirdre would also burn her name on the chest of a “lucky” few in addition to the red boot tips symbolizing the blood they would walk through for her. Each warrior in Avahas’ group had a twohanded sword. These were regular humans lacking extraordinary powers beyond their discipline, determination, and experience from both training and in some cases battle. This is your final lesson, I don’t have much new to tell you, but your combat practice just became harder… Pair up! The troopers paired up, faced each other and took their stances. Avaha attached a sack of paint on each armour and said in a loud voice: First paint! I would say blood, but I need you combat fit tomorrow. Your training will be hazardous enough with sharp blades and no helmets. She walked up the short staircase and loudly yelled: Begin! Three seconds passed and it was already over. She then continued as a tournament and finally called out: Winner! We didn’t get our full delivery of helmets so you will be the only one in my group wearing one. She then went on to drill them in marching and various combat exercises. At one point Avaha had enough in regard to the damaged and broken weapons, called a warrior to herself struck his sword of as if it was a straw of gras and ordered him to go retrieve new weapons from the armoury and to while he was away to tell Lyssa and Deirdre not to book anything for the afternoon. Four hours later with troopers all sweaty, Avaha ordered: go rest you will need your strength tomorrow. Avaha didn’t mind, it would give her some time of with Lyssa and Deirdre. The warrior returned. I have done as you asked lady Avaha. behind him men carried in piles of new weapons. Avaha stood up from her seat where she had sat and waited for the return and spoke: Tomorrow your true power will be tested. Tomorrow you will prove you have fists, stomachs and hearts of Iron. you will march on, and you will bring honour and glory to the house of Iron! You will not let your clan down but prove your worthiness …Tomorrow. Now go home. Avaha headed for the gate and down the street. In another part of town Lyssas’ green eyes were watching intensely as her warriors fought. Lyssa stood at the top of a wide dark marble staircase with a little house on top and a large green fire burning in an iron holder at each end. Her troopers dressed in shiny steel with black armour details and the inscription “House of Steel” on their armours. Faster! Ordered Lyssa Each warrior held a glaive smaller and less decorative than Lyssas. They fought with great speed and strength in an almost mechanic manor. They stood in long lines and moved with great Precision. Lyssa valued speed and...
