Chapter One How our lives are changing around the world with the use of face masks You’ve probably thought about how our lives have changed almost entirely overnight. All of us have many changes in different aspects. It feels sometimes like a big hit we got in our heads from an unexpected brick. Most of us were not ready for all the changes we have been forced to make in order to, basically, survive. The early news of the coronavirus was that only older people and those with underlying medical conditions would be at extreme high-risk from COVID-19. But now, it’s clear that anyone, from babies to seniors, can develop severe symptoms and possibly death if they contract the disease. And unfortunately, it’s taking time to understand the importance of using face masks for prevention and specifically to protect seniors and others with high risk that we may come into contact with. Now, it’s possible for one to have the virus but not show any symptoms and then spread the virus to family members and people who get in close contact with them. This problem was not on our list of things to deal with as soon as it should have been. Every single aspect of our regular routines is a thing of the past. We have to realize that we need to adapt to this new way of life. This new way includes the use of a face mask when we need to go outside from the place we call home. We have to remember to wear face masks in public places, and we need to have extra face masks in our cars and in our purses just in case. Most women don’t even use makeup anymore because it will simply come off on the inside of the face mask. Some men have stopped shaving their faces because what’s the point? The importance of vanity has been thrown out the window. There are far more serious topics to discuss. Many businesses are closed like indoor restaurants, bars, malls, and many offices worldwide. Many have been laid off and are still waiting for an unemployment check. People have had to delay making mortgage payments or paying their rent. And mandatory quarantine means something different now, with many different rules about quarantining in each country. In some countries like Panama, they only allow women to go out to buy groceries two days out of the week. Men are allowed to go on other days and only at certain hours. From Friday at 5:30 p.m. until Monday at 5:30 a.m., everyone have to stay inside their homes (except for medical emergencies). Seniors only go in public and buy groceries from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Maybe this sounds weird for some people. In my personal opinion this is a method that can decrease organization of criminal activity. If we try to understand that perspective it makes sense. I once had the opportunity to travel almost all over the world, doing research as a psychologist in aviation. My research goes back to the first time I traveled aboard an airplane in the 1980s. It changed the way I used to see things and helped me open my mind about life. I was exposed to the different cultures and ways of living in many countries. I have registered with the Federal Aviation Administration more than five thousand hours aboard airplanes as a psychologist in aviation. I was the Director of my psychological research in countries like Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, Chile, Uruguay, Belize, Jamaica, Haiti, Dominic Republic, France, Amsterdam and Spain among others. From 1989 to 1994, I traveled to a few countries where it was normal to see some people on the streets wearing face masks to protect themselves from air pollution. Back in those days, we were not trying to survive from coronavirus. Now all over the world, a face mask is basically mandatory when you go in public spaces. I am extremely grateful I had the opportunity to learn the culture of those countries and make great friends too. Unfortunately for this planet I have been in countries where the skies were so dark from pollution that they seemed right out of a horror movie. It was sad to see some children wearing face masks or having a bandana to cover their nostrils to protect them from the air pollution around them. And now, global air pollution has gotten even worse and we have the pandemic due to the coronavirus. When I was younger, I really thought that all countries were going to protect Mother Earth. I thought that the oceans where going to be cleaner and safer. Now, I feel maybe I had far too high expectations in that department and many other issues I was totally wrong about. I’m sure that I am not the only person that was thinking like that during those years. How did we get to this point in our planet? Well, we know the answers to that question: the negative contributions we have been giving to our environment. We can’t make more excuses for not protecting the legacy we are living for future generations, and we need to be more proactive in protecting the environment. It’s better late than never... I wish now that the only reason for a mandatory face mask was for air pollution and not to put an end to a global pandemic. Fortunately, we have the ability to create solutions for our problems. When we put our minds to work, we can accomplish many goals to help each other to achieve a better outcome. I have to recall these feelings of emotions: hope, faith, and love. Each emotion needs to be activated in every person during this pandemic. Just think about this, in most countries around the world the only businesses that are still operating are groceries stores, gas stations, postal services, online services, some professionals working from home, hospitals and clinics to offer the basic and essential services we need to continue the new daily journey. Many schools around the world have been closed for months and some of them are able to offer classes online. Some countries are trying to go back to normal in phases by following rules such as using face masks and keeping a distance of six feet between each person. In the United State there are some differences between states with the new rules of quarantine and the use of the face masks when you go in public. There are some states that have more rigid and mandatory rules than others. If you pay attention to the news on the television you can see how these differences in the rules are affecting the spread of the coronavirus. We’re tired of only hearing bad news in the media. The last thing we need to be doing is pushing the panic button 24/7. The mind is working 100% and we assume we are using all the potential. Unfortunately that’s not the case. We have the subconscious and the conscious parts inside our brains trying to run the show of every aspect in our life since the day we were born. Our subconscious is 95% working on autopilot for us, and it doesn’t know that it is just the bad news that you just watched on TV. If you got worried in the present (the 5% that is your conscious part) while you were watching the news on TV you may start feeling sad and down. If the news on TV were good news only, you will feel a little hope or feelings of happiness. You will continue the rest of the day with a positive attitude in a few words you got a boost of confidence. Each person is different in how we have perceptions of the reality around us. As you can see if you make the numbers the subconscious is running your personal experiences in life. Don’t feel that you don’t have control. YOU are able to DECIDE with your remote control what do you want to see on TV? You can watch channels with movies of war or you can watch movies or TV shows that you can learn something positive. It’s up to you. Just think about how this affects you with this example: you go to a grocery store with a budget and return home with some extra items that were not on the list. You have a subliminal message (a technique used in many marketing and social media with the purpose to cause direct influences) in your subconscious and conscious parts of the brain from many products you see on TV commercials and without even realizing most likely you bought some of them at the grocery store and you are asking yourself why the budget went out the window? Right now all over this planet we are in a way on the panic mode due to the coronavirus; we can’t escape our reality of how the bad news on TV is affecting us. On the other hand, I have seen acts of kindness growing in many places, with people helping each other – especially young people helping seniors to buy groceries for them. In my neighborhood, some homes have a door with a drawing from a kid thanking all the workers that are working to deliver the mail or the packages. These children are taking their own VOLITION to be grateful to others during these hard times. Small actions like those are teaching us lessons that we can fight and win the battle together. We need to focus on the 5% of the conscious part – the reality in a positive way to work for us. If not, we can get overwhelmed in situations that we are not able to control. Right now, as I am writing these words, we don’t have a cure or vaccine for this deadly virus. We have the best scientists working day and night to achieve that goal. Maybe one scientist will come up with the idea to send thousands of airplanes to spread a solution at high altitudes that will kill the virus in each country. Even better, let’s send all the spaceships around the orbit to do it. Anything is possible if you activate the I-gene, the letter “I” standing for imagination. All of us have it, but we don’t use it most of the time. We need to put our collective creativity and imagination to find a cure or a vaccine for the coronavirus. We are...
