Pilchan Lee untersucht die exegetische Tradition, die zwischen dem Alten Testament und der Offenbarung existierte. Er geht davon aus, daß als exegetische Tradition die frühe jüdische (apokalyptische) Literatur als ein Schlüsselelement in der Gestaltung des neuen Jerusalems in der Offenbarung funktionierte. Das Hauptargument des Johannes besteht darin, daß die Kirche (die durch verschiedene Bilder symbolisiert wird) jetzt im Himmel ist (Kapitel 4-20) und daß die Kirche (die durch das neue Jerusalem symbolisiert wird) in Zukunft vom Himmel auf die Erde herunterkommen wird (21-22).
