Chapter 2 60-SECOND OPTIMISM & HAPPINESS HABITS “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.” - Winston Churchill Optimists vs. Pessimists = Uncomplicated + Gigantic Difference Optimists Focus on Making Everything 3 Things: 1. Better 2. Better 3. Better In sharp contrast, Pessimists focus on W, M, & C: W = Whining M = Moaning C = Complaining Optimism versus Pessimism really is that profoundly and delightfully simple. Think about it. When you are near an Optimist, they spend approximately 99% of their time on (a) making things better + (b) focusing and enjoying all the wonderful things around them. On the other side of the coin, when you are near a Pessimist you see their scowls, and you hear them pick apart everything they encounter with their non-stop Whining + Moaning + Complaining. Recommendation: Focus your time each day and in everything you do on making and finding good experiences, thoughts, and feelings. And wherever you go, focus non-stop on finding something positive there. And take actions to make everything you encounter… 1. Better 2. Better 3. Batter. People will love it when you are near them. Remember = You are a magnificent Role Model. When you focus on the positive and making everything better, people enjoy you, and you are a “breath of fresh air” for them. And deep in their hearts they want and crave and long to be emotionally positive and upbeat – like YOU! EXAMPLE of HOW SUPER-IMPORTANT + POWERFUL IT IS FOR YOU TO BE OPTIMISTIC ROLE MODEL = Syllabus I Created & Used for My MBA Students After I completed my Ph.D. in Psychology, I worked in a management consulting firm. After that, I worked as a corporate manager in two famous companies: 1. ExxonMobil – the big oil & chemicals company 2. Baxter International – a $4 billion/year medical supply company Well, I decided to leave my corporate management positions to start my own consulting firm. I wanted to deliver keynote speeches and training workshops, create pre-employment tests, and write books. So, I contacted a super-successful Ph.D. business psychologist who had a background somewhat like mine. He operated his own highly regarded consulting firm for over 20 years. So, he would not consider me a competitor. I asked him for his advice and wisdom on how I should start my consulting, testing and speaking business. One of his recommendations was that I should teach one evening per week in a university’s MBA Program. He mentioned that would provide a little income plus put me in front of people who might want to use my expertise in the companies where they work. Reason: Evening MBA students are full-time employees in companies who attend the part-time evening MBA Program. So, I landed a one evening per week teaching gig in a good university’s MBA Program. My students all were full-time employees who were earning their MBA degrees in the evening while they continued their full-time jobs. In my Syllabus I created for each class I taught I put in my syllabus that in my classes – and in discussions with me – my students were NOT allowed to complain! They could say something that ‘concerned’ them – but I a. did NOT allow them to complain b. insisted they IMMEDIATELY MUST say possible solution The director of the MBA program said I was the first and one-&-only professor who put an optimism requirement in the class syllabus! She even told the president of the entire university, and he said he never heard any professor putting an Optimism-Only requirement in a class syllabus. And in my classes, students were NOT allowed to complain in class discussions and exercises. And my students also could NOT complain to me. Instead, I clearly instructed my students that if they did not like something or had a ‘problem’ with anything in the classes or discussions with me, I insisted they say something like the following: “I feel concerned about [topic] AND the possible solution is doing [list positive actions they will take].” IMPORTANT: My students LOVED my insistence on > Optimism > allowing ZERO Complaints = NO Pessimism Each year, I typically taught three courses – each during evenings. One of my students – I’ll call her Susan [not her real name] took all three of my classes. Susan was an officer in the U.S. Military. She was a combat specialist who fought in wars. She also was a trained sniper, plus she also trained in hand-to-hand combat, and knew how to kill people with her bare hands! And she certainly looked the role = super-strong and she always looked ready for action. If you ever had to walk in a bad neighborhood or go into a combat zone, you would want Susan by your side! She only needed to pass one more class to earn her MBA. And my class was the last class she needed to pass to earn her MBA. On the last day of that class, all I was going to do was (a) collect students’ final papers and (b) administer their final exam. Before that last class started, Susan walked up to me, and said she very much “needed” to talk with me after class. I said OK. All my students finished their final exam and left the classroom – except Susan. After everyone else left, Susan walked toward me, and sat near me. I looked at her – and she looked very serious as she looked at me. She was 100% quiet for a few minutes – not saying a single word! I wondered to myself, “What’s going on here? What does she want to talk about with me?” After a few minutes of silence, Susan looked directly into my eyes. She very slowly took a deep breath. Then, after a few moments of more silence, Susan burst into tears, and began sobbing totally uncontrollably. Why was this ultra-tough looking trained sniper and military killer crying uncontrollably while she was alone with me? Finally, she stopped crying. And she looked me in my eyes, and she slowly explained: “During this last semester, someone shot and killed my husband! I felt so very, very, very horribly upset and depressed that I thought many times of killing myself. And I know how to do that. I have a lot of guns and other weapons I could use to kill enemies or kill myself.” “But I did not kill myself.” “And the one and only reason I did not kill myself was because each week I looked forward to attending your class. Why? Because you forced all your students, including me, to focus on being optimistic, finding and implementing solutions, and not wallowing in complaining or talking about problems.” “Dr. Mercer, you and your class kept me alive. Thank you. Your optimism and upbeat class kept me alive.” I thought WOW – and I felt proud. RECOMMENDATION = Always remember – and feel delight – that being optimistic makes you a wonderful Role Model. And people need + hugely benefit from an optimistic Role Model – like you can be for them. RESEARCH ON REASONS TO BE OPTIMISTIC I will summarize for you all the research on good reasons to be optimistic. In sum, you being optimistic monstrously benefits and improves your > Health > Career Success Optimism helps two main ingredients of your health = your 1. Physical Health 2. Emotional Health Research shows optimists > get sick less than pessimists > when sick, optimists heal faster than pessimists Details of this research can be found...
