The collection includes nearly 5,000 post-1851 volumes, also from his personal library, with books and journals written by European pre-modern thinkers such as Bodin, Lipsius, and Thomas Hobbes; Enlightenment thinkers such as Voltaire, Lord Kames, Adam Smith, Joseph Priestley, Jonathan Swift, and Pufendorf; Deists such as John Toland, Anthony Collins; and Romantic thinkers such as Coleridge, Madame de Staël, Chateaubriand, the Brothers Schlegel, and Franz von Baader.
