What constitutes success, what contributes to success and how do we become successful in business and management? And then how do we stay successful? In this book we are intending to give some short answers, guidelines and models based on personal experience and developments such as the Strategic Control Loop, Triple-S-Virtues for Success and Strategic Success Factors. Furthermore, we want to share key insights of experts on the subject of success we consider to be essential, such as Sunzi, Musashi, Machiavelli, Clausewitz, Moltke or Emperor Marcus Aurelius, management gurus like Peter Drucker, Jim Collins, Robert Grant, Henry Mintzberg, Gary Hamel and C. K. Prahalad, coaches and consultants like Stephen Covey, Gay Hendricks or Mahan Khalsa, authors like Daniel Pink or Harro von Senger and many others. Therefore, let us dive into evolution, into topics such as personal and corporate success, leadership, innovation, entrepreneurship, career, strategic success, dealing with stratagems and implementation. Look at the ideas for success presented in this book like you would look at a buffet: choose what is best for you! In a nutshell: Become successful successfully!
Before writing this book, Dr.-Ing. Arno Ritter, MBA was a manager in the largest European organization for applied sciences, an executive in a global consulting firm and an independent management consultant, management coach and lecturer.

Personal Success
"He who stops getting better has stopped being good" (probably quote from John Andrewes in 1615), see also "Qui cessat esse melior, cessat esse bonus" or "Hee that ceasseth to be better, ceasseth to be good" (https://quoteinvestigator.com/2019/10/27/good-better/ (Status: August 2024)). Hint: see also TQM and kaizen (Glossary). "If something is difficult for you to accomplish, do not believe that it is impossible for man in itself, but if something is possible and appropriate for man, believe that this is attainable for you as well" (Marcus Aurelius in his Self-Reflections – Sixth Book, 19, freely translated). We have already mentioned some individual success factors such as intelligence and character, ambition, commitment (including engagement), discipline, efficiency and effectiveness, strategic thinking, curiosity and interest, courage and self-confidence, and fortune in the analysis chapter. In addition, we emphasize that the strategic success factors such as focus, concentration of all forces are also essential for success (see Clausewitz 2003 and page ?). There is another factor that our father/grandfather pointed out and that we call the Papa-Rolf-Benno principle. Figure: Papa-Rolf-Benno principle for success (see also page ?) "Guys, choose a profession or a course of study that really interests and excites you, that is, something that matches your inclinations. Then you will automatically be better than the average. Always strive to be better than your competitors. And when choosing your course of study, make sure that it is not a useless art … Finally: become happy and enjoy what you are doing" (Papa-Rolf-Benno principle). You will find out that it is align with the Collins’ Hedgehog concept. In this chapter, we would like to focus on three general aspects of personal success: 1) our ability to prevent or enable success which Gay Hendricks call our "Upper Limit Problem", 2) efficiency and 3) effectiveness. Our responsibility is to avoid as many mistakes as possible. Let’s start with this: Eliminate obstacles. "NO PANIC," see "The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy" (Adams 2000). "Never take counsel of your fears" (General Thomas Jonathan Jackson, nicknamed "Stonewall Jackson", see https://beruhmte-zitate.de/zitate/131170-andrew-jackson-angst-ist-ein-schlechter-ratgeber/ (Status: August 2024)). Ad 1: Fear should never guide us in a negative sense (fear should only keep us from doing stupid or bad things). This is a universal rule – for every area of life. Also, we are not victims. That sounds a lot like Viktor Frankl, a survivor of the Holocaust (Frankl 2019 and 2020). And we are responsible for our own success. That’s why Hendricks challenges us to overcome our barriers. In this context, he distinguishes four areas of competence: 1 THE ZONE OF INCOMPETENCE 4 THE ZONE OF GENIUS 2 THE ZONE OF COMPETENCE 3 THE ZONE OF EXCELLENCE Table: "4 main zones of activities" according to Hendricks (2009) "(3) Don’t you realize how much you already have to offer that you can’t plead lack of talent and inability? And yet you still remain of your own free will on your low level?" (Marcus Aurelius in his Self-Reflections – Fifth Book, 5 (3), freely translated). One of the secrets of Moltke’s success was to focus on what was feasible (Möbius and Bigge 2023). In the "Effective Executive" (Drucker 2014b), Peter Drucker urged us to focus on our own strengths (the strengths of our superiors, colleagues, and subordinates; and on the "strengths" of the situation, i.e., what we can do). We should never focus (only) on weaknesses (i.e., our "Zone of incompetence") or on things we cannot manage. Similarly, Hendricks urges us to focus primarily on our area of excellence or on our area of genius. You can find the details in the remarkable book "The Big Leap" (Hendricks 2009) and some extracts in the next table. THE BIG LEAP – Conquer Your Hidden Fear and Take Life to the Next Level 1 Remove Your Last Obstacle to Ultimate Success in Wealth, Work, and Love The one problem that holds you back & the moment of discovery
• The Upper Limit Problem is our universal human tendency to sabotage ourselves.
• The Upper Limit Problem is caused by a too-low thermostat setting on our ability to achieve and enjoy our ultimate success. 2 Preparing for your Big Leap The One Problem and How to Solve it
• THE UPPER LIMIT PROBLEM: preventing us to reach Zone of Genius
• Consequence: staying in the Zone of Incompetence, Competence or Excellence, instead of reaching the Zone of Genius 3 Making the Big Leap Dismantling the Foundation of the Problem
• Hidden Barrier no. 1: Feeling Fundamentally Flawed
• Hidden Barrier no. 2: Disloyalty and Abandonment
• Hidden Barrier no. 3: Believing That More Success Brings a Bigger Burden
• Hidden Barrier no. 4: The Crime of Outshining 4 Getting Specific How to Spot the Upper Limit Problem in Daily Life
• Typical ways we upper-limit ourselves: worry, criticism and blame, deflecting, squabbling, getting sick or getting hurt • Upper limit behaviors: hiding significant feelings, not keeping agreements, not speaking significant truths to the relevant people
• The Three Ps: punishment, prevention and protection 5 Building a New Home in Your Zone of Genius How to Make Every Moment an Expression of Your Genius
• The Genius Question no. 1: What do I most love to do? (I love so much I can do it for long stretches of time without getting tired or bored.)
• The Genius Question no. 2: What work do I do that doesn’t seem like work? (I can do it all day long without ever feeling tired or bored.)
• The Genius Question no. 3: In my work, what produces the highest ratio of abundance and satisfaction to amount of time spent? (Even if I do only ten seconds or a few minutes of it, an idea or a deeper connection may spring forth that leads to huge value.)
• The genius Question no. 4: What is my unique ability? (There’s a special skill I’m gifted with. This unique ability, fully realized and put to work, can provide enormous benefits to me and any organization I serve.) 6 Living in Your Zone of Genius Using the Ultimate Success Mantra to Thrive in Love, Abundance, and Creativity
• Out of the box and onto the spiral
• The ultimate success mantra: a central guiding intention
• The enlighted NO – turn down something that doesn’t fit in your Zone of Genius
• Renewing and refining commitment 7 Living in Einstein Time Creating Time for Full Expression of Your Genius
When we switch to Einstein Time, we take charge of the amount of time we have. We realize that we’re where time comes from. We embrace this liberating insight: since I’m the producer of time, I can make as much of it as I need.
• Where in my life am I not taking full ownership?
• What am I trying to disown?
• What aspects of my life do I need to take full ownership of? 8 Solving the Relationship Problem Transcending the Upper Limits of Love and Appreciation
• Unsatisfying relationships: devitalized, passive-congenial and conflict-habituated relationship
• Plenty time for yourself, put a priority on speaking the microscopic truth … Table: Insights from "The Big Leap" according to Hendricks (2009) Since the "Upper Limit Problem is our universal human tendency to sabotage ourselves", we must be aware of this problem in order to overcome it (manage the hidden barriers). With certainty, we can at least push the boundaries. Furthermore, we need to find our "unique ability" (remember this when we discuss the "Hedgehog concept"). "There are no street signs in the jungle. You have to find your own way" (Udo Lindenberg in his song "Niemals dran gezweifelt" (= "Never doubted it"), freely translated). We also need a strong will to win in order to succeed. Otherwise, we will fail, as Kensei Musashi has already recognized. "No matter how important the opponent is, you must never think he is superior. Otherwise, you have already lost the fight" (Musashi 2021, freely translated). Ad 2: Apart from this limiting factor, we need to consider two other aspects to be successful: efficiency and effectiveness. Next, let’s take a look at efficiency ("Do things right"). There is a vast amount of literature and methods on how we can become more efficient personally or as managers....
