In recent years, interst in the large group of skilled immigrants from India to the United States has soared. This book is the first to analyse the work trajectories and related assimilation experiences of independent Indian women immigrants in the United States.

The authors introduce the linkages between individual experiences and the macro trends of women, work, immigration, and feminism and explain the historical context of immigration processes and procedures. Focusing on Indian immigrant women, who have come to the United States on their own, rather than with family, is a novel approach. Using historical records, previously unpublished gender disaggregate immigration data and interviews with Indian women living in the US since the 1960s, the analysis centres on the women’s experiences and demonstrates that independent migration among India woman has a long and substantial history. Their status as skilled independent migrants can represent a relatively privileged and empowered choice. However, the authors show that their working lives intersect with the gender constraints of labor markets in both India and the US. Their experiences of being relatively empowered, yet pushing against gender constraints in two different environments, can therefore provide a unique perspective to the immigrant assimilation narrative and comparative gender dynamics in the global political economy.

Written in an accessible way, this is book breaks new ground by providing a comprehensive study of professional women immigrants from India. It will be of interest to researchers in the fields of anthropology and sociology, including migration, race, class, ethnic and gender studies as well as Asian studies.
