INTRODUCTION

The evening of November 8, 2016, was supposed to follow a familiar script. Political pundits had their victory analyses prepared, establishment figures had their concession speeches ready, and Americans across the country settled in to witness what most expected would be a predictable transfer of power from one mainstream candidate to another. Instead, they watched a political earthquake that would fundamentally reshape not just American politics, but the very nature of democratic discourse in the 21st century. As Donald Trump stepped to the podium in the early hours of November 9th to claim an unlikely victory, he wasn't just winning an election—he was announcing the arrival of a movement that would challenge every assumption about how American democracy functions, how political power operates, and how citizens relate to their government.

What emerged from that unexpected victory was far more than a political upset; it was the crystallization of forces that had been building beneath the surface of American society for decades. The Make America Great Again movement, commonly known as MAGA, became the most significant populist political phenomenon in modern American history, fundamentally altering the landscape of conservative politics and forcing a broader reckoning with the health of American democratic institutions. A shift among Republicans moving more into Trump's camp is primarily driving this movement, with a 16-point increase in GOPers identifying with the MAGA movement between the two polls right before the 2024 election (55%) and March (71%), demonstrating how this movement has not only sustained itself but continues to grow in influence and reach.

The Great Unraveling: America Before MAGA

To understand the MAGA movement's profound impact, we must first grasp the context from which it emerged. America in the mid-2010s was a nation experiencing unprecedented levels of political polarization, institutional distrust, and cultural fragmentation. Polarization has increased since the 1970s, with rapid increases in polarization during the 2000s onwards. According to the Pew Research Center, members of both parties who have unfavorable opinions of the opposing party have doubled since 1994, while those who have very unfavorable opinions of the opposing party are at record highs as of 2022.

The traditional gatekeepers of American political discourse—mainstream media, established political parties, and institutional elites—were losing their ability to shape public opinion and maintain social cohesion. Economic inequality had reached levels not seen since the Gilded Age, technological disruption was reshaping entire industries overnight, and demographic changes were altering the fundamental composition of American society. Meanwhile, social media platforms were creating new spaces for political engagement that bypassed traditional channels of information and allowed for the rapid spread of both genuine grassroots sentiment and coordinated disinformation campaigns.

Against this backdrop, significant portions of the American electorate felt increasingly disconnected from their political representatives and skeptical of the institutions that had previously commanded their trust. Rural communities watched manufacturing jobs disappear to overseas markets while urban areas thrived in the new knowledge economy. Traditional religious and cultural values seemed under assault from rapid social change, while globalization appeared to benefit coastal elites at the expense of heartland America. These weren't merely policy disagreements—they represented fundamental conflicts over national identity, cultural values, and the very direction of American society.

The Republican Party itself was experiencing an identity crisis. The conservative movement that had dominated GOP politics since the Reagan era was showing signs of exhaustion, unable to deliver on its promises to shrink government, restore traditional values, or reverse America's perceived decline on the world stage. The party's establishment wing, represented by figures like Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, offered familiar prescriptions—tax cuts, free trade, and military intervention—that seemed increasingly out of touch with the concerns of ordinary Republican voters who were facing economic insecurity, cultural displacement, and political disenfranchisement.

The MAGA Phenomenon: More Than Politics as Usual

Into this void stepped Donald Trump with a message that defied conventional political wisdom but resonated powerfully with millions of Americans who felt forgotten by the political establishment. The Make America Great Again slogan wasn't just a campaign promise—it was a comprehensive worldview that offered simple explanations for complex problems and bold solutions that traditional politicians had deemed impossible or impractical.

With Trump's victory in the 2024 election, the principles and priorities of the MAGA movement, especially its devotion to Trump, became even more important to Republican candidates and office holders. This demonstrates how the movement has transcended its origins as a campaign phenomenon to become a defining force in American conservatism, reshaping not just electoral politics but the entire conservative ecosystem of think tanks, media outlets, and grassroots organizations.

The MAGA movement succeeded where other populist efforts had failed because it combined several powerful elements: a charismatic leader who could command media attention and inspire intense loyalty, a comprehensive narrative that explained American decline and offered a path to renewal, and a communication strategy that bypassed traditional gatekeepers to speak directly to supporters through social media and rallies. Most importantly, it offered something that establishment politics had failed to provide: a sense of meaning, belonging, and agency for Americans who felt increasingly powerless in a rapidly changing world.

What made MAGA particularly potent was its ability to synthesize various strands of American political thought that had previously existed in tension with each other. It combined economic nationalism with cultural traditionalism, populist anti-elitism with strong executive authority, and isolationist foreign policy instincts with aggressive assertions of American strength. This synthesis created a political coalition that included former Democrats, independent voters, and lifelong Republicans united around a shared sense that America had lost its way and needed dramatic change to restore its greatness.

Beyond Trump

While Donald Trump undoubtedly serves as the movement's central figure and primary catalyst, the MAGA movement is intrinsically tied to Trump, making its future after him uncertain. However, the forces that gave rise to MAGA extend far beyond any single personality. The movement tapped into deep currents in American political culture that had been building for decades: suspicion of cosmopolitan elites, resentment over economic displacement, anxiety about cultural change, and frustration with institutional dysfunction.

MAGA's solidarity with conservative, nationalist and populist movements in Europe has an objective: finding partners for Trump's effort to transform global culture. This international dimension reveals how the MAGA movement represents part of a broader global phenomenon of populist nationalism that has emerged in response to the perceived failures of liberal international order and globalized capitalism.

The movement has also proven remarkably adaptable, evolving from a long-shot presidential campaign to a governing philosophy, from a political insurgency to a cultural brand, and from a vehicle for protest to an instrument of institutional change. Charlie Kirk had a significant political and mobilising influence among the Trumpist youth, demonstrating how the movement has cultivated new generations of activists and leaders who will carry its influence forward regardless of Trump's personal political future.

The Stakes: Democracy in the Balance

Understanding the MAGA movement is not merely an academic exercise or a matter of historical curiosity. American democracy is in crisis. The emergence of affective polarization and populism has contributed to a divided America in which both sides perceive every election as an existential threat to their ways of life, values, and democracy itself. The rise of MAGA represents both a symptom of this crisis and a potential catalyst for further democratic breakdown or renewal.

In mid-2024, MAGA Republicans were substantially more likely than non-MAGA non-Republicans to view political violence as justified and to endorse beliefs associated with violence. This finding illustrates how the movement's impact extends beyond conventional political competition into questions about the fundamental norms and institutions that sustain democratic governance.

At the same time, the movement has demonstrated remarkable staying power and continued growth in influence. Thirty-six percent of registered voters identified themselves as MAGA supporters in the March NBC News poll. It's a significant increase from past NBC News polling — up from 23% of respondents in a merged sample of all of NBC News' polling across 2023 and 27% of respondents in a merged sample of NBC News' 2024 polling. These numbers suggest that MAGA represents a durable realignment in American politics rather than a temporary disruption.
