For the successful design, construction and performance of structures built on such marginal soils as peat and organic soils, it is highly necessary to predict geotechnical behaviour in terms of settlement, shear strength and stability, with respect to time. A reliable characterisation of their geotechnical properties and mechanical behaviour is thus called for, and subsequently, device-suitable design parameters and construction techniques applicable to these conditions. There is also a need for specialised laboratory and field tests to evaluate geotechnical properties, and for certain specific tools / equipment and/or techniques. This book is specifically written to provide a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of peat land, especially with regard to its geotechnical engineering properties. The work will benefit students, researchers, engineers and academics working with these types of soils.
