This book aims to equip readers with the skill set to succeed in Operations Management. The current book is the proverbial 'Glue That Keeps It Together' from a business and Operations Management perspective, while it also has a decided Healthcare and Medicine bias. The subject matter can supplement your lifelong learning, optimize your operational strategy, and is foundational for business managers navigating the challenges of producing goods and delivering services. It might also serve as a reference or workbook for leaders, senior management, entrepreneurs, and those aspiring to reach those lofty heights - those dedicated to overseeing Operations Management and Strategic planning. Most of this book's Chapters (One through Ten) will primarily revolve around the business organization and Enterprise model. Chapter Eleven focuses on Operations Management in Healthcare and Medicine, highlighting the impact of neural networks and artificial intelligence (AI), particularly their influence on the clinical laboratory. Chapter Twelve, titled 'Operations Management in Healthcare-Now and the Future State - Cancer Diagnosis,' concludes with exciting AI applications in the subspecialty field of oncology. The Epilogue introduces the concept of the production possibility frontier (PPF). The Appendices complement the main body of the book. Appendix One defines the glossary of key terms, acronyms, and jargon in Operations Management. Appendix Two provides formulas and equations used in Operations Management. Appendix Three synthesizes a basic approach to solving problems in Operations Management. Appendix Four provides a concise description of the understanding of financial statements and the key numbers and ratios you need to know. Appendix Five lists thirty-eight case studies found throughout the book, designated by the relevant Chapter. This book is a vade mecum (Latin for 'go with me'), a compact guide or handbook intended to be carried and consulted frequently. In addition

Dr. Jerry J. Marty received his medical degree (M.D.) in 1976 from Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. After that, he completed six postgraduate years of training at Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine (Postgraduate Year one), Strong Memorial Hospital/University of Rochester Medical Center, Rochester, New York (Postgraduate Years two to three, and five to six) and completed an additional year in straight Internal Medicine at Saint Joseph's University Hospital -VA Medical Center/Creighton University School of Medicine, Omaha, Nebraska (Postgraduate Year four). A Visiting Fellowship in Clinical Cytology and Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) was undertaken in the fall of 1989 under the World-renowned Dr. Torsten Lowhagen at the Karolinska Hospital and Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. An eight (8) week Fellowship in Forensic Pathology was taken under the direction and tutelage of Dr. Werner Spitz, Co-Author of the 'Bible' of Forensic Pathology - Medicolegal Investigation of Death (now in its 5th Edition, 2020) at The Detroit Medical Examiner's Office in Detroit, Michigan, lamentably designated murder capital of the United States, at that time. The author is Board-certified in Anatomic, Clinical, and Cyto-Pathology with a sub-specialization in Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Cytology. He has authored several publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and two separate Book Chapters in his field of expertise, specifically in Cytopathology and Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) Cytology. Among his earlier responsibilities, Dr. Marty held teaching positions at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and later at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and Pharmacy (now Northeast Ohio University College of Medicine, NEOMED), Rootstown, Ohio. A Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree at George Washington University, School of Business (GWSB), Washington, D.C., was conferred on May 17, 2009. Dr. Marty's most recent professional position until 2016 was as Chairman of Pathology and Medical Director of Laboratories at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center (MFSMC), a three-hundred-seventy-eight (378) bed Joint Commission (JC) accredited hospital facility in Baltimore, Maryland. Apropos of the location chosen for this creative, nonfiction work, Dr. Marty spent many of his early years in Puerto Rico. Later, he had a home in northwest Puerto Rico, near Arecibo, Puerto Rico, a facility for the Radio Telescope Observatory. The Author is based in the United States and enjoys travel, photography, and Chess when not working.

CHAPTER 1:
YIN AND YANG,
BEGINNING OR
END

Yin and yang represent the dynamic phases of change and transformation within a circular, continuous, interconnected cycle, neither being absolute but rather mutually creating and transforming into one another. The commencement of a great age... or would it be the end of humanity?

It all started with a signal broadcast into the vastness of space. The 169-second Arecibo Message was sent, aimed at the Hercules Constellation, specifically at the globular star cluster Messier 13 (M13), located more than 25,000 light-years away. The 1,679 bits of binary-encoded data were transmitted to announce humanity’s existence in the universe. Cornell University astronomers Frank Drake and Carl Sagan conceived it. Earth didn’t expect that someone—or something—would reply... far sooner than expected, less than three decades later.

This fact alone raised questions about the interception of this message at a distance much, much, much closer than 25,000 light-years. A logical explanation was lacking. One consideration: An interstellar scout mission? Yet another conjecture was the real possibility that an extraterrestrial race was already present within our solar system, perhaps even utilizing the depths of Earth’s ocean—such as the abyss of the Puerto Rico Trench — as a secret base, harboring the mysteries of transmedium and Unidentified Submersible Objects (USOs).

The debris of the downed extraterrestrial visitor’s craft was scattered across El Yunque Rain Forest, possibly drawn to the initial contact made by the Arecibo Radio Telescope Observatory on November 16, 1974. The Arecibo Radio Telescope Observatory’s proximity to areas with high concentrations of UFO/UAP and USO sightings, such as the towns of Aguadilla and Lajas, has contributed to the perception that Puerto Rico is, indeed, a key focus in the search for extraterrestrial life.

Major M. was seated on a bench at Plaza Colón, captivated by the Spanish colonial architecture surrounding him, especially as found in the traditional plazas scattered across the Island Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, which had been a Spanish colony for more than 400 years (1493-1898). Plaza Colón in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, was representative, if not an exemplar, of Spanish colonial architecture, dedicated in 1769, just nine years after the city itself was founded.

The plaza traces its colonial roots, as well as its architectural features and uniqueness, to La Madre Patria (the mother country—Spain), a peaceful retreat and oasis from the cacophony of street sounds within the center of this historic city, the third largest in Puerto Rico (population of approximately 79,500 in 2004).

Following Spain’s Laws of the Indies, towns were obliged to feature a central rectangular plaza surrounded by civic and religious buildings. Designed with the obligatory classic colonial arrangement—town hall (Alcaldía) at the western edge with a clock-towered neoclassical architecture exemplifying the classical style, inclusive of Corinthian columns and portico; church (Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria) at the eastern end; a central monument zone with a monument to the city’s founders nearby, and streets radiating outward. The government municipality (municipio) had preserved its iconic orientation and architecture through the intervening centuries. The Major’s gaze was drawn to the plaza’s construction and layout, paved entirely with travertine (marble) pavers, in creamy tones with brown accents, creating a unified aesthetic. Surrounded by planting beds and shaded by numerous almond trees, the area provided both solace and tranquility. Major M. noticed the perimeter of twenty bronze lampposts, each supported by an oriental odalisque sculpture (complete with a turban and veil), serving both as lighting and ornamentation around the plaza. Surrounding the plaza area, low colonial building façades, many of which have been repurposed—including a converted chapel, convent, and hotel from the 1920s — are noteworthy. These would serve as a future base of operations, within walking distance of the plaza, for the investigative team.

Major M. awaited the arrival of Dr. Elena Ruiz, director of the Arecibo Radio Telescope Observatory and a member of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute.

The Arecibo Radio Telescope played a major role in both the NASA SETI program (later renamed the High Resolution Microwave Survey [HRMS]) and, afterward, Project Phoenix in 1998, the groundbreaking detection setup that had been used for both the targeted components of the HRMS and Project Phoenix—a combination of hardware and software known as the Targeted Search System (TSS), returning, appropriately, to Arecibo, Puerto Rico, after an eventful six years.

Major M. stood, his upright posture assertive, confident, and self-assured, betraying his military training as he greeted Dr. Ruiz, who approached with elegance. Her smile met his eyes with familiar recognition, evoking both recent memories and shared experiences. They embraced and greeted each other warmly, then walked together toward the center of the plaza, stopping by the statue of Christopher Columbus that has stood in this location since 1896. Sculpted by A. Coll y Pí of Barcelona, Spain, it became the plaza’s namesake. Throughout the centuries, the original spatial integrity, orientation, and typology of the plaza envisioned by the Laws of the Indies have endured. Significant restorations between 1997 and the early 2000s successfully modernized the plaza while preserving its original colonial layout. As the city’s civic heart from the eighteenth century to the present, it remains not just historic but truly architecturally unique.

Major M. and Dr. Ruiz spoke in hushed tones, then in covert conversational language as locals passed within earshot. They continued walking. In colonial plazas in Spain, as in Puerto Rico today, the afternoon stroll for socializing and relaxation is a custom known as the paseo. It was 5:00 p.m., and the sun would soon set. In this leisurely social activity, people of all generations, including families and friends, walk through plazas and parks or along adjacent scenic side streets. There was much to discuss, especially forthcoming presentations, plenary planning sessions, dialogues, and critical next steps, after the so-called Arecibo Incident. The underlying question they both had was whether the incident would be divulged and, if so, how much.

Almost invisible and barely perceptible to the untrained eye were the secret service and military detail guarding the inconspicuous pair. Both were skilled at going unnoticed, embodying the ‘grey man’ principle. Major M. and Dr. Ruiz held many closely guarded secrets, including national security measures, protocols, and information concerning both real and potential existential threats to the world. Existential risk recalibration would entail a reassessment of humanity’s survival in terms of the universe.

Over the next several days, the two would meet with their counterparts representing scientists, astronomers, astrophysicists, anthropologists, theologians, government officials, independent contractors, military personnel, and others to frame the context of what would represent First Contact—The Arien (Alien), extraterrestrial visitation, the aftermath of the Arecibo Incident, and ultimate disclosure.

The following morning, Major M. and Dr. Ruiz met up with Dr. Juan Marty, now a full-fledged astronomer and astrophysicist after the completion of his formative postgraduate studies in astronomy at the Department of Astronomy and the Cornell Center for Astrophysics and Planetary Science (CCAPS) in Ithaca, New York, and the Carl Sagan Institute. It was Dr. Juan Marty who had discovered the original, peculiar, and otherworldly signal, an oscilloscopic tracing or inflection originating from a distant corner of the galaxy, the globular star cluster Messier 13 (M13, also known as NGC 6205) in the constellation Hercules. (He was the one who had uttered “Hay un mensaje” [There is a message]... one fateful evening, at the Arecibo Radio Telescope Observatory.] Now, more than three decades after the infamous November 16, 1974, Arecibo Observatory Radio Telescope broadcast a radio signal - an outbound message to the Cosmos. “Little did mankind realize the signal would later beckon visitors as a directional beacon to our solar system” . . . Afterward, the U.S. government would confirm that the extraterrestrial presence had likely been here for centuries, and was referred to alternatively as the elders or ancient ones, a moniker for the non-human intelligence (NHI) designation subsequently attached to them. They lay dormant, for the most part, in a base at the depths of the Puerto Rico Trench, the second-deepest location on Earth. This nadir point, known as the Milwaukee Deep, is located approximately 100 miles northwest of Puerto Rico, within the western extension of the Trench. Speculation arose: Was there a portal to M13 in the Hercules Constellation or nearby that represented their originating home planet?

The day would begin shortly after...
