Research into ‘ethnic’ attainment differences in British higher education tends to depict students from minority ethnic backgrounds as disadvantaged, marginalised, discriminated against and excluded. This shapes the current theoretical perspectives adopted by university policies and informs practice across the country. The Minoritisation of Higher Education Students aims to show how current university policies and practice that intend to address reported ethnic attainment differences in British higher education perpetuate, rather than ameliorate, the status of minority ethnic higher education students.

Discussions throughout the book demonstrate that group-based social differentiation and student-centred education foster the idea that ethnic and social attributes matter and create a divisive subtext, which loses any sense of our common humanity. In this book the consequences of this perspective for students, their educational attainment and university education as a whole are examined. In particular a process of ‘minoritisation’ is identified that results from the current approaches to ethnic attainment.

The book should be of great interest to scholars, postgraduate students and professionals in the areas of higher education; learning and teaching; equality and diversity; ethnicity; and attainment. It should also be of interest to teaching staff and policymakers concerned with issues in higher education.
