Machado de Assis is among the most original creative minds in Brazil's rich, four-century-long literary tradition. Caldwell's critical and biographical study explores Machado's purpose, meaning, and artistic method in each of his nine novels, published between 1872 and 1908. Helen Caldwell was Professor Emerita of Classics at the University of California, Los Angeles. She was made a Grande Oficial of the Ordem Nacional do Cruzeiro do Sol by the Brazilian government in 1959, and by the award of the Machado de Assis Medal by the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1963.
