[Hodegeticum brevibus aphorismis pro collegio concionatorio conceptum / A Guide for Preachers in Guiding Principles. Latin-Geman]
The Hodegeticum of the Leipzig theologian Johann Benedikt Carpzov (1607–1657), also known as the 'Father of Symbolics', is the representative homiletics of Lutheran orthodoxy. The text, originally published in 1652, is made here once again available together with a translation. The text is of interest not only in regard to the history of theology and piety. With its focus on the autonomous homiletic competence of the preacher and with its rhetorical art, addressing both intellect and feeling of the recipient, this homiletics is proving to be more liberal and modern as could be expected from a strictly orthodox theologian. It should not be neglected by homiletic formation.
