Around 200,000 people in the Soviet Occupied Zone and in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) were subjected to politically motivated persecution and imprisonment. The repressive measures they suffered were phyiscally and mentally traumatizing and had a long-term affect on their personal and family developments in their later lives. In their research project the authors examined the health status and social situation of the former prisoners many years after their imprisonment, and the results are presented in this volume. They describe not only the construction and staging of the political persecution, the circumstances under which they were imprisoned and their long-term mental and physical effects, but they also reveal how their individual life courses were shaped by these experiences. The impressive life stories aim to sensitize the public to the far-reaching consequences of politically motivated violence inflicted on people and to contribute to a public acknowledgement of the burdensome nature of these experiences.>
