Hunter-Gault, Charlayne

Charlayne Hunter-Gault is an American journalist, author, and civil rights trailblazer. A contributor to the New York Times and the New Yorker, a correspondent on The MacNeil/Lehrer Report, and the chief correspondent in Africa for National Public Radio, Hunter-Gault has worked in every journalistic medium. A major player in the fight for integration, she broke race barriers in 1961 when she became the first black woman to enroll at the University of Georgia. She has won two Emmy Awards and a Peabody for excellence in broadcast journalism for her work on the NewsHour series, "Apartheid's People." She has written several books: In My Place (1992), a memoir about her role in the civil rights movement; New News Out of Africa: Uncovering Africa's Renaissance (2006); and To the Mountaintop: My Journey Through the Civil Rights Movement (2014). She lives with her husband in South Africa.
