With her qualitative study on compositional processes in music-imaginative pain treatment, the author investigates which competencies and practices patients develop in order to “musicalise” pain sensations and alleviation ideas. Methodologically, online-accessible audiographed therapy sessions were transcribed and evaluated. The dense case descriptions and comparative analyses provide insight into the patients’ implicit knowledge, subjective theories and untapped artistic abilities. This sheds light upon the unique possibilities of music therapy when treating chronic pain patients and the significance of co-creative processes in the presentation and transformation of pain experience in pain psychotherapy.
