William H. Foege, M.D., M.P.H., is senior medicaladvisor for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He isPresidential Distinguished Professor of International Health at theRollins School of Public Health, Emory University in Atlanta. Heserved as director for the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention from 1977 to 1983 and then as the executive director ofthe Carter Center and the executive director of the Task Force forChild Survival and Development.
Nils Daulaire, M.D., M.P.H., is president andchief executive officer of the Global Health Council, theworld's largest membership alliance dedicated to advancingpolicies and programs to improve health throughout the world. Hehas worked for two decades in health care in developing countriesand served as the deputy assistant administrator for policy andprogram coordination at the United States Agency for InternationalDevelopment. A Phi BetaKappa and summa cum laude graduate ofHarvard College, Boston, Daulaire received his medical degree fromHarvard Medical School and his master's in public health fromJohns Hopkins University in Baltimore. He is a member of theNational Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine.
Robert E. Black, M.D., M.P.H., is the Edgar BermanProfessor and Chair of the Department of International Health ofthe Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr.Black is trained in internal medicine, preventive medicine,infectious diseases, and epidemiology. He has served as a medicalepidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and workedat institutions in Bangladesh and Peru on research related tochildhood infectious diseases and nutritional problems. He is alsoinvolved in the use of evidence in policy and programs, thedevelopment of research capacity, and the strengthening of publichealth leadership in developing countries.
Clarence E. Pearson, M.S.P.H., is senior advisorto the World Health Organization Office at the United Nations. Hewas formerly president and chief executive officer of the NationalCenter for Health Education and served as vice president of thePeter Drucker Foundation for Nonprofit Management and vicepresident and director of health and safety for Metropolitan LifeInsurance Company. Pearson conceived and serves as executive editorof a series of books on global health published by Jossey-Bass.Along with C. Everett Koop, M.D., he coedited the first in theseries, Critical Issues in Global Health.
